Have you pressed the O/D button? You only get gearbox codes with it pressed, and ignition on.

Yup, and obviously TE1 and E1 bridged in diag box, sometimes you struggle to get a connection, but if you're getting engine codes it must be working.

If that's the case go to Toyota and buy a genuine one they aren't much more expensive. as for earthing points as long as the earth cable has good connections, is out of the way of anything hot it should be ok to put wherever you decide (within reason)
do you think that battery earth straps would be an over kill
cheers

If the two straps at the front of the engine are ok you probably won't improve matters, it'll be extremely hard to insulate the gearbox from the engine!
If you want to try it just use one of the transfer case to gearbox bolts, then connect it to one of the gearbox crossmember bolts.
What exactly is the issue? Been looking though a million posts and its not clear.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...

I believe it might be the case that cheap filters don't have the valve in them that stops the oil draining straight back into the engine when you switch it off meaning that when you re-start it takes longer for the oil to make it's way around the engine (starting is when most engine wear takes place).
With a gas guzzler like a Surf it's hardly worth trying to save 5 or 10 quid on a cheap filter given that in terms of diesel it's probably only 20 miles worth!
