I hope you've got a receipt and made a note of the sellers address.
The seller should have contacted his insurance company and not have released the truck until the attempted theft and damage was investigated.

Jeez this has kicked up a bit of a stink!

Just to put a few things right, I approached the guy selling this surf as I had seen it near one of my jobs, I knocked on his door and asked if he wanted to sell which he did. ( I had known the car for about a year)
There was a bit of messing around as he needed time to find a new smaller car for work before he sold this Surf.
On Tuesday some scumbag tried to steal it and he phoned me asking if I still wanted the car, I did.
So it was me that went round to sort the damaged wiring, they had drilled the door handle to get in & mullered the wiring by the ignition lock. I managed to get it started so I knew it would get me home when I went back the next day to collect it.

I asked him not to let the insurance people take the car as neither of us would of seen it again as they would probably have scrapped it!

The police have been round to look at it but as usual can't be arsed to investigate it..

I think it's a straight car, it's got a fair bit of paper work with it including the old Jap service books v5 etc.

I just need to know what I have here so I can order some parts.

Ps I've had a few beers so forgive any miss speeling etc

still, would be wise to check it out anyway - the owner might have been duped when HE bought it, afterall.

I wouldn't have bothered, would have offered the buyer a bit of cash off so he gets his truck and I wouldn't have to mess around with it.

To much hassle for very little gain. Bet his excess is more than sorting the wiring out or even fitting a new imobilser if you involve the insurance.

            That's exactly what I did ,
I knocked £150 off the price, I got my truck, he kept his NCB & the insurers won't make a penny, result!
I have already sorted the wiring & ordered a new identical immobilizer for £40.
I still need a new drivers door handle & lock plus a tailgate window switch if anyone's got them spare.

That's the thing though, what have you got?

If the chassis number behind the drivers side front wheel stamped into the chassis is different from the one at back of engine bay on a plate you could have problems knowing what is what.

Did the engine come with the chassis or from the body donor for example.

First thing is to check the chassis numbers and engine number against the V5, which does the registration number belong to?

Did you do a hpi check? If not I'd do one now, on the V5 details and which ever chassis number is different from the V5. If it turns out one or other of the vehicles has been stolen I'd get my money back before I inform the police.

OK I have the numbers here.

                Plate on bulkhead reads
                MODEL KD-KZN 185W
                ENGINE 1KZ-TE
                FRAME KZN-130

                Stamp on chassis
KZN 130 0010--- I've left the last digits off.

                So what do I have? A kzn130 or kzn185?

I think I have read somewhere that there is a cross over on some models with a later 185 engine in the earlier chassis, but I have a gen 3 as far as I know.

Just post a pic of the truck, its far easier!!

The only difference is the airfilter, if the body is a 3rd Gen then you'll need KZN185 filters.

There isn't a crossover between chassis that I've ever seen, you're thinking of the part time or Multimode 4wd differences. But part time 4wd 3rd gens still arn't the same as a KZN130 2nd Gen even underneath.

The engine is the one thing that IS the same, its what the KZN stands for, 130 stands for 2nd Gen body, 185 for 3rd Gen body.

                  If you have a 3rd Gen with a 3.0 deisel, you have a KZN185.

                    I'd say you have a KZN130 because that's what's on the chassis, with a dodgy KZN185 plate.

Post the full Model and Frame numbers and i might be able to come up with something.

I'll try and get some pic's on later. Can anyone with a 3rd gen surf do me a big favour? and see what the chassis rail stamp under their wheel arch says and what the plate on bulkhead is also. Maybe some other 3rd gen's have 130 on the chassis rail & 185 as the model on vin plate???.

                        Many thanks

Here are a few pictures (if this photo bucket thing works)

The car is N reg 3.0 diesel has coil springs front & rear, exhaust exits on the right, pop out parking mirror, hand brake in "normal" place between seats,
3rd gen ??? I think it is what about you guys?

Ok Nev here are the numbers can you find anything out about these?

                              Plate under bonnet

                              model KD-KZN 185W GAPGT
                              engine 1KZ-TE
                              frame KZN130 0010003

                              COLOUR 8L6
                              TRIM FX16
                              PLANT A51

                              CHASSIS STAMP KZN 130 0010003

So chassis number & frame number on vin plate match & they look genuine.
car is definitely a 3rd gen with coil over front shocks etc.
So is this a standard but unusual number or is something wrong?

                              Thanks in advance Nev.
