I'm getting bored with defending myself if I'm honest.....a simple question has turned into an assault on MY opinion...I dont care what everyone else wants to use their cars for.....I use mine for me....thats why I bought it and if at any time I feel like helping some people out I will...but I wont be dragging cars out of drifts or ditches....ever.

Last couple of snowy years I've towed, pushed and generally aided a lot of stranded motorists. Didn't know I wasn't insured, but it doesn't change what I would still do a jot TBH. I have an element of common sense and won't attempt something I regard as risky - it's called being responsible for ones own actions.
During the major floods in the Midlands about 4 or 5 years ago, a mate and I rescued a number of motorists (I live about 5 miles from the Severn which flooded in biblical proportions), some of whom were grateful, one of whom disconnected the tow strap after I pulled his car from the flood and towed him home, and f*cked off without so much as a 'cheers mate', but the most memorable one was a young girl in a Metro who'd stalled in about a foot of water on a single track lane, and was frantic in tears as the flood was rising quite rapidly. We got her out and towed her car home. She was in floods of tears and too upset to make much sense, but we felt good having done it.
People are very risk averse these days. A little common sense and risk / reward balance makes simple rescue risk negligible, and quite rewarding for the rescuer.

My apologies, I did not intent to assault your opinion, merely to put across why I personally would if I was able, offer help to anyone that needed it. At the end of the day you dont know why that person in the 2wd was out in the first place, not everyone is an idiot and they may have had a genuine reason or need to be out.
I hope you do not get stuck in any drifts or ditches this year, I also hope that should it happen you would refuse any assistance from passers by on the same grounds you would refuse to offer it. It`s worth remembering though, even 4x4`s are not infallible

I dont understand how I've only taken the answers I want.
I'm also aware of situations where helping someone is rewarding.....I have always been a car nut..and the last 10 yrs I have always had a 4x4......the 1st few years were all newfangled and wanting to tow just about anything I could get a rope or towball on.....including pulling cars out of fields.....off motorways....towing non-runners for mates etc etc....but the novelty has worn off. I can see the merits of having a 4wd...but I'm keeping the rewards for me......Its my car...my money goes into it.....I dont see Joe public wanting to do sh*t for me...so I wont do sh*t for him.
But then I've already said this a million times and I'm going to get a million more people telling me they want to help people.....then help them...thats great......but I wont anymore.

VC. You're on a user forum, there's nothing we (collectively) don't know about Surfs. We've spent a lot of time and energy gleaning that knowledge. Immagine what would happen to this place if we decided to adopt your, shit, attitude towards helping others...Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Tell you what....keep your little 'community'....My current experience is that there are a good few people in here who are too far up their own posteriors to realise that there are people who dont agree with everything they say.
I dont doubt the knowledge...I dont doubt it one bit......but I'll keep going my own merry way. Thanks for the heads up......I've never been made to feel so unwelcome in a forum.

Settle down fella, you kinda brought this on yourself. The original post was fine pondering the legal ramifications of recovery however it upset people when you gave it the big I wont be helping anyone thing, you are entitled to think and do as you please but post provocative responses and get the reply to match!
You cant expect everyone to have the same opinion as you? There is a really good variety of people on here just dont expect the response to always be what you want it to be.
It would have been a very dull post if everyone had said yeah yeah I agree...................
