  • Nasty banks sending me presents

I had an account with Alliance and Leicester purely for their high interest introductory offer. Santander bought that company and everything was transferred over / rebranded. The introductory offer ended and I withdrew all the savings back to my other account. Around six months past then I received a letter from Santander telling me that they had charged me £5 for not using my account. I called them and closed the account, the bloke on the phone apologised and waved the charge of £5 that placed me overdrawn. I didn't realise I had some outstanding interest earned sitting in that account so he also credited this interest back to my other account with another bank. Account close, job done.

Six months pass again, and I receive another letter from Santander stating words to the fact of:
Your current account currently has an Unarranged Overdraft of £190. We require you to repay the the overdrawn amount plus any interest and fees
Anoyed at the fact they still have me on record with an obviously "active" account I call their complaints line.
    - Apparently the last person didn't close the account due to there being a pending overdrawn charge. Even though he waived the fees.
    - I was charged due to Santander changing their policy.

I was given another apology, account closed and fees waived, and sent a bottle of alcoholic beverage as a kind gesture
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

It took us ages to get out of santanders clutches (with the abbey) used to be fine till santander took over, friggin useless, dispite closeing the account and transferring everything we got letters/demands/charges etc for months,
think they fineally got the message, the bstd's even paod out a already cancelled direct debit!! put us in overdraft, then charged £35 for being overdrawn, got it all back in the end but as with many things it comes down to people not doing their job properly,

Santander are absolutely rubbish if you need to get anything arranged with a human.

I business bank with them, purely because its completely free.

But I always have hassles whenever something goes wrong and you have to get something sorted out.

But I just pay cheques/cash in, and get cash out, so its hard to get that to wrong.

So I received a letter from them today which is an apology and a cheque for £10.04. Any ideas what this is for? Not that I'm complaining, but I've not paid in any money for quite some time. And the outstanding interest I've already been paid as mentioned above which was £0.57. To be honest I think the cheque is more than the amount of interest I earned the whole time I was with them so I'm baffled.

Quite brill . that cheered me up

We have/had a nice flexible mortgage with Abbey .... we want to rent out our house while we off boating. We phoned up re our mortgage in light of having a tenant in for a couple of years and told no problem, just a small arrangment fee .......... so we are about to finish getting house ready and tenant arranged for this coming November and wife decides she will phone Santander only to be told the info previously given was wrong and a BIG admin charge + expensive by-to-let mortgage in the offing (subject to admin discussing it over the course of the next 10 days) .....Absolute W-ankers is the least of my feelings. Wife and me have agreed that when admin feel the need to come back, she is under strict instructions to tell them we have changed our minds! Our tenant is coming direct so no official need to let the #######s have anything to do with our life. We are not buying to let, we are letting to preserve our property (and a bit of helpful cash) while we away, so they can go forth and multiply elsewhere .....

I don't know anything re mortgages, but sometimes I've found that you can be too honest. If your friend is paying you some upkeep to borrow your place while you are away, and you are still paying the mortgage then like you say it's probably best Santander never knew or got involved

Good luck persuading a mortgage company to enter into a non-standard agreement for a residential mortgage...

actually, I'm rather hoping we wont have to do any persuading, just do the same as is deemed appropiate, sort of attempt to match them by design and just tell the truth, the whole truth, but not necessarily the actual truth,
                            So help me ...... Amen!

Don't want to worry you but the one thing you MUST do is talk to your household insurance company, because if something happens whilst you are away (e.g. the house burns down or gets burgled) you could find that they'll decide you breached the policy conditions and they won't pay out.

Now that would be a real bugger, as you could find yourself having to pay the mortgage on a house that doesn't exist any more or having to replace all your expensive possessions that got nicked (possibly by the tenant).
