i made one out of and old 10 ton porta press ram and a bit of scrap H beam.
welded up a big star spike to stick on the end of the ram. welded a stop to one end of the beam and a clamp to hold the ram on the other end.

That Roughneck splitting axe from Screwfix is excellent. I have been using one for around 5 years to do the same amount of timber that you are talking about.
Forget electric and DIY splitters - yes they are less effort but are ###### slow compared to a fit bloke with an axe.
If you have access to a tractor, there are good hydraulic splitters which are more powerful and quicker. They are good for the knotty old stumps which always defeat me.

I know this may shock some people but sort of going back on thread
I was genuinely amazed at the lack of among other things hire depots at your disposal.
Swindon is hardly the biggest place in the sw of england but even I could walk to about 4 different hire shops within about 15 mins.(surf train)?
I don't think I will ever complain again ,well maybe not till I have forgotton about this.
With regards to the R22 it wasn't R22 it was R502 "back in the day" unventilated service tunnel leak testing we found the leak but couldn't be f**ked to do any thing about it,that was very very close
light headed then eurphoria then death
(Which was nice)Eat.Sleep.Surf.Repeat.

That's what we did year before last when we went to see the inlaws.
I chopped a good few meters, busted a couple of axe handles too!
Got fed up and paid one of our friends who came round with a mate and helped finish it. In my defence it was 10cuM though!l'm FAME-ous!
