          £20 a day from a hire shop...

Cut all your wood to log length, and then just hire one for the day...
          That's what i'm gonna do.
You should be able to split a winter's worth of wood in a day surely?

My neighbour has one and he loves it as it saves a lot of effort. I just use a sharp hatchet and a large hammer which is much cheaper/slower but does the same thing essentially.

                    That's what I'm talking about.

Need something the wife and kids can use.

Hatchets are for splittling kindling wood and scaring girls with. You want an axe. a proper axe. Also you will need to know how to use it. you do not need mauls or wood grenades or crappy electric log splitters. Get on with the job, it will make a man of yer..
                      it's in me shed, mate.

It's what I've always done, and probably will do this year as well.
But every year I look at that 8 cu metres of wood and think...
one of them log splitters would be easier.

Why not teach the kids to swing an axe then ?

It might save a little axe swinging, but your back will be in tatters..

Are they cr4p then? I don't know, I've not seen one in action.
I'll go again this year with the axe, If nothing else it'll save 200 quid.
