  • Animals or Humans.

Copied from a female biased forum, to see if it ends in the same bun fight here with a mostly bloke point of view....

If there was a choice between rescuing A drowning child or YOUR drowning dog what would you choose?

I'll get my dog, the childs parents can get the kid out. Where the hell did all this water come from all of a sudden, anyway?
    it's in me shed, mate.

What does the kids mum look like? Would she be grateful?

I'd save my dog, same reason as Chillit... but I'd probably save the child over our cat though.

As I don't own a dog, my answer might be biased.

The child, every time. If I was Korean, I'd be eating dog.

Would you save the child, or YOUR cow / sheep / hen?

I'd save pretty much anything of mine before I'd save anything of some stranger's.

A sad indictment of our society; but nowadays there's always a danger some bleeding heart liberal will claim you may have done something inappropriate to the child whilst rescuing it. I'd not risk it.

Agreed, however a few years ago I tried to rescue some geese from a dog and ended up getting rescued by two women as I went under for the 3rd time!

Im a dog owner, but for me Id save the Child, every time, theres no dilemma and no doubt for me here, and I certainly wouldnt be giving a stuff about "possible" accusations from strange wooly minded liberal who may or may not exist somewhere outside your imagination.
I suppose what choice you make is going to be based on your own life experiences, Id expect different people to make different choices.

The wife's dog would only save the child if they were ball shaped and had just been thrown by someone as a game of fetch.

My dog would probably be hanging off the neck of the wife's dog.

So I guess I'd just jump in & save the child - both of our dogs are pretty decent swimmers and love being in the water.

How many witnesses are there to these events btw? The Genovese effect would surely take hold if there was a crowd watching.

Yep, love my dog to bits, but seriously? A child is drowning? No-brainer.

Unless the child was really ugly obviously. Or ginger.

I did start off my post with, "If I had time to think about it," but deleted it as it looked wishy-washy and was bit of a cop out.

Considering all the dogs that have come through our hands here. Only one has been a worse swimmer than me (in fact he sank to the bottom of the river like a stone, and I had to jump in and drag him out. Rehomed in a house far from rivers and sea).

So the dog doesn't need my help.

Although I find children annoying, and tend to avoid them at all costs, I would be unable to stand by and watch someone die. I just hope I'd have the sense to tie all seven dog leads together to form a long safety line (maybe tie the smallest dog on the end as a float) and throw that at the child. Rather than jump in myself and end up with a picture of a child dragging me out of the water, ending up in the local rag.
