We're getting close to my bug bear here. If you worry about fuel consumption or can't aford the fuel; don't buy 4 litre V8s or 20 year old 3.0L diesels. If you don't worry about the cost, don't ask the question.Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Mine's a 3 litre manual. It's standard apart from a 2 inch lift,freewheeling hubs and a locked ADD system.
I got about 1mpg extra from fitting the freewheeling hubs. Not enough to warrant fitting them but I prefer the way it's set up now as I can use low range in 2wd for reversing trailers/recovering boats on slipways etc.
Oddly, I noticed improved handling with them, which is a big plus.
Can't see the advantage in removing the aircon-it should be a free running pulley creating no drag if it's turned off.
I'm thinking an electric fan next just because I don't like viscous fans and the extra power would be handy for towing.
30.2mpg last fill by the way-timewise,50% town, 50% A-roads.Mileage,30% town,70% A-roads and I don't pussy around.I don't cane it either though.
And no, I don't care what it costs in fuel. I just like it...

I bought my Surf with fuel economy very much in mind. Well actually that is bollox of course. But my previous car's fuel economy was about a third of what I get now. Apparently 6 litre V12s are thirsty. Particularly when you insist on driving them like an angry child with ADD. So all in all it all worked out.
Things I do to reduce fuel usage now? Sometimes I will turn the engine off when I am not using it. You know, like when I am going to be in the office for a few hours. Or at night.

That's like saying a steam engine with 1kw output is going to use the same amount of energy to produce that 1kw as a diesel engine.
And no, I don't care about 1mpg.Fuel usage means nothing to me. However, if I can make one less downshift on a steep hill while towing,I'm happier because it means Mr Myopic in his Metro is less likely to to run into the back of me when he suddenly realises I'm going very slowly.Last edited by nos4ra2; 8 April 2011, 16:33.
