I removed my old iron 2.4 and replaced it with an all aluminium 4.0 petrol, power has increased dramatically and economy has increased.........slightly!

What do you get on average Vince?
About 20 mg mixed? Is that on 33s? do you still have the diesel final drives in place?
We're getting close to my bug bear here. If you worry about fuel consumption or can't aford the fuel; don't buy 4 litre V8s or 20 year old 3.0L diesels. If you don't worry about the cost, don't ask the question.

Mine's a 3 litre manual. It's standard apart from a 2 inch lift,freewheeling hubs and a locked ADD system.
I got about 1mpg extra from fitting the freewheeling hubs. Not enough to warrant fitting them but I prefer the way it's set up now as I can use low range in 2wd for reversing trailers/recovering boats on slipways etc.
Oddly, I noticed improved handling with them, which is a big plus.
Can't see the advantage in removing the aircon-it should be a free running pulley creating no drag if it's turned off.
I'm thinking an electric fan next just because I don't like viscous fans and the extra power would be handy for towing.
30.2mpg last fill by the way-timewise,50% town, 50% A-roads.Mileage,30% town,70% A-roads and I don't pussy around.I don't cane it either though.
And no, I don't care what it costs in fuel. I just like it...
You really have no idea what you're talking about. 1mpg? Who the fcuk cares about 1mpg?
Energy is energy, if it takes 1kw to cool your engine just now, it will always take 1kw to cool your engine. It doesn't matter where that 1kw comes from, it will cost exactly the same for your truck to produce it.

Come come Andy. Only one bug bear?! As for being close to it, I think someone walked up and repeatedly slapped your bug bear's face...
I bought my Surf with fuel economy very much in mind. Well actually that is bollox of course. But my previous car's fuel economy was about a third of what I get now. Apparently 6 litre V12s are thirsty. Particularly when you insist on driving them like an angry child with ADD. So all in all it all worked out.
Things I do to reduce fuel usage now? Sometimes I will turn the engine off when I am not using it. You know, like when I am going to be in the office for a few hours. Or at night.

questions questions
Original final drive, and I was getting low 20's mixed when it was on 31"s. It's on 33" M/Ts now but I haven't driven it since last summer to do a comparison, people keep giving me things to do.

Efficiency of air movement isn't quite the same thing as 'energy used to cool'.
That's like saying a steam engine with 1kw output is going to use the same amount of energy to produce that 1kw as a diesel engine.
And no, I don't care about 1mpg.Fuel usage means nothing to me. However, if I can make one less downshift on a steep hill while towing,I'm happier because it means Mr Myopic in his Metro is less likely to to run into the back of me when he suddenly realises I'm going very slowly.
