  • Winch power issue

I put a meter across the battery terminals whilst engine running. 13.5V. All OK there.
When I run my winch it drops down to 12 and then quickly runs down to 11, 10, 9 volts until it actually cuts the engine out.

Is this a battery or alternator fault?

Its more likely a winch fault. But there is quite a draw from a winch goran.
What sort of battery do you use, how "big" physically and how many CCA. IF ITS JUST A TINY BATTERY, IT WONT BE ABLE TO HANDLE SUCH A CURRENT DRAW.
sorry for shouting, im not typing that lot again.

Does it do the same, with the engine revving ?
    Non intercooled nothing.

      Lol
      Don't know the specs offhand.
It however is an upgrade from the original to accommodate the winch.

Your suggestion that's it's the winch's fault might ring true as I'm having other issues with it.

Yes, same with engine revving, it just docent cut out then.

          Just one.
          It's not a Smurf.

Yes, went flat a few weeks ago.
I think I'll take it for a bit of a run tomorrow. It's not been out the garage for about 6 months

right you will never fully charge a battery on a car you need to charge with a charger ................... if it's gone flat once the chance's are one of the cell's will be gassing try charging it over night then see how you get on ............. if that dont work then i would try replacing it .............. what is it on by the way ?

Make sure the winch/bumper are well grounded and there's no chaffing/shorting on the power cables.
