Isn't there an app for that? Every little helps...!
To try and be fair about it I offer to keep kids mobile phones, etc in a tray during the lesson if they don't hide them away in a bag or pocket.
If they're caught with them when I'm teaching the phone gets put in an envelope and is left at reception for the kids to pick up at the end of the day. As soon as they work out whats going to happen if they don't play ball the kids tend to keep them away.
The classic one is "but I was using the calculator on my phone, sir" which is kinda hard to argue with in a science lesson sometimes!
You find it hard to formulate a winning argument with a kid you are teaching?
When i was at school the geography teacher had a yard long ruler he called Excalibur, the gym teachers`s had bats called stingray 1 and stingray 2 they used to hit you with, various others would throw blackboard dusters at you then there was always the cane. Seemed to work i never got my mobile out but they hadn`t invented them then
Aggree with Apache, nowt against mobiles as such but the people who are constantly on em are annoying, especially when in public places like on the bus, i'm sick of haveing to listen to some c##ts conversation which is useually conducted at the top of their voice, and it's not just young people, the olduns are worse as they seem to think you need to shout into the phone,
also wots with this need to be drinking a bottle of spring water all the sodding time, this is the uk not the bl00dy desert,
A nice grump thread.... love it! The only time I get upset is when the person is driving ................ now, don't get me started
I've got one of them 'smart' phones which is great as long as you don't let it try to be smart as it fails miserably! But I bought it for cruising on the boat and it's there to allow us to remain in contact. (we off cruising the canals some time later this year for year or more...)
I have a TomTom but I find the phone is better then both Tom AND my brain

Jeeze times have indeed changed.
It isn't difficult to win an argument with most kids (although it can be challenging at times if you have a particularly intelligent kid) but it hardly seems fair to take a phone off a kid who is getting on with their work and using their mobile phone as a calculator.
The main thing to avoid doing is the whole "because I told you to" thing cos that just doesn't cut it in so many ways these days.
And in some schools you're onto a winner if you manage to keep all the kids in the classroom without some of the arsey ones just walking off...
Yes and all started by a cyclist who probably feels duty bound to wear ridiculously tight lycra and a pointy shaped plastic hat as he pedals along the pavements. Just when was it that it became essential to dress like a tw4t in order to cycle to work??
Okay, I'm old but I do have an iPad, iPhone, iPod, blah, blah, blah. The iPad is great for the internet, watching films and listening to music. The iPhone is the same, albiet on a smaller screen. Both of them have some great games and very useful apps, the thing is I don't walk around all day with them glued to my ear or gazing mesmerised at the screen!
They are both very handy to have and entertaining when the need arises, i.e long bus, train or plane journeys. What pees me off more than anything else is seeing a driver, in an expensive car, using the phone while driving. Surely if the can afford an expensive car they can afford a bluetooth headset, or bluetooth I.C.E unit to link the phone to?

I do see such creatures, but when I cycle I usually wear normal shorts and a T-shirt, with a fleece for colder days. There isn't enough eye-bleach in the world for the sight of me in Lycra!
Also, I ride 'off road' to work (and most other places too). Too damn dangerous on the roads, and being a walking commuter the rest of the time, hate those feckers that come screaming up behind you on the pavement.
If i need a calculator i use a calculator of all things.they cost naff all these days.
My phone spends all its life on mute, occasionally i look at it to see if someone`s called, texted or emailed. I deal with anything i want to deal with in my own good time or i forget it, makes for a less stressful life

You get half a dozen kids per class not bringing a pen or pencil to write with so you've got no chance with calculators.
Mobile phones, however, are an entirely different kettle of fish. It's a rarity for a kid NOT to have one with them surgically attached to their hands so it seems.
