  • An observation

On my sunny walk home from work at 3:30 this afternoon, I lost count of the number of people with phones in their hand, frantically pressing buttons, and earphones in their ears.

What is this current obsession with blocking out the world at any cost?? What's wrong with looking around at the world while the trees are budding under blue skies and, listening to the buzz of people heading home on a Friday eve?

It's mental isn't it? I popped into the British Embassy last week, Going through the metal detector the Guard asked me to leave my weapons and mobile on the tray.

He didn't believe me when I said I didn't have a mobile phone!

The whole mobile phone/palm/sms thing has passed me by.

I find it more annoying before 3:30 in the afternoon. Particularly when I'm trying to teach the kids that are so ###### interested in their phones! (or iPods or Blackberries or whatever other smart alec answer they come up with when they say "but sir, it's not a phone")

Welcome to the modern world old timers. Advertising, peer pressure, the need to compete and always have the latest gizmo is the cause of it all. Have any of you been on an aeroplane recently. Have you seen the frantic rush by everyone to get their mobiles turned on before the wheels stop rolling. Have you seen all those people who communicate with soft fruit, desperate to send a last email before take off? When you go through airport security do you find that you are the only person in the queue who doesnt have a laptop or at a minimum an Ipad or Ipad clone? I do , and I know its mainly because Im old and having grown up without all these can manage without them most of the time. I do have a laptop but it stays in the house. I do have a mobile but as often as not its on a worktop in the kitchen, and its not a socially acceptable mobile as its pretty basic. I rarely use it , but it is a useful thing to have. I do have an IPOD but I never put it in my ears and wander around, its in the car, plugged in to the "wireless" If I want to watch a movie, I do that on the telly, but I know times change

You want to try getting to tesco's and back in cheltenham town at lunch time.....with all the fleckers texting and talking it takes ages dodging them cus they are on cloud nokia totally oblivious to you or anyone else whizzing along as you go to get yer lunch....

Must admit can be funny watching them walk into post and look up to apologise.....twits.........

Can be even funnier deliberately walking straight at them to see thier reaction when you glare at them menacingly for getting in YOUR way.....

By the way wasn't it nice to see the sun and feel the warmth.....
                      Remember arrows are silent.....................
Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

                        I don't understand that.
My son is one of those smart ar5es that would say that to a teacher.
Why can't schools ban mobile phones? When I was at school, pagers were the in thing, but we couldn't be seen with them at school or they were confiscated

I do think it is a sad time when someone feels the need to invent an app that utilises the camera so you can see what's in front of you while you walk and text, but for me nothing beats a good long walk listening to a podcast on whatever subject tickles your fancy.
Let's take another step back to your original activity of walking. If half the lazy cu*ts in the UK got up of their fat asses, went out for a bit of walking or exercise, enjoyed the great outdoors and didn't use their cars to drive 400 metres for a packet of Mars Bars, then maybe it would be better times and just how I remember it way before mobile phones and Playstations took over (as he gasps for air).

Of course that's coming from a man who is sitting outside Tesco, in the car, on a Friday night, typing this on his iPhone while his wife does the weekly grocery shopping

Isn't there an app for that? Every little helps...!

To try and be fair about it I offer to keep kids mobile phones, etc in a tray during the lesson if they don't hide them away in a bag or pocket.

If they're caught with them when I'm teaching the phone gets put in an envelope and is left at reception for the kids to pick up at the end of the day. As soon as they work out whats going to happen if they don't play ball the kids tend to keep them away.

The classic one is "but I was using the calculator on my phone, sir" which is kinda hard to argue with in a science lesson sometimes!

I had a hellishly difficult time getting around Asda today. People just kept getting in my way, walking slowly, stopping to peer at the shelves as if waiting for insperation.

When I came out I did check the car park for a coach, but it appeared that the OAPs had got there on their own.

Give me the texters, at least they can still move.
