  • In the market for a Surf - MPH gauges??

    good evening all.

First post. Looking for a hilux surf at the moment and have seen that claims to have 75k on the clock. For a gen2 this is going to be impossible right?
What I'd really like to know is where JDM surf ever sold with MPH gauges?
I've owned JDM vehicles before and have never had MPH gauges, just the klm with a converter running the original dials to display mph.
I'm guessing the gauges would have been swapped.
Strangely the owner thinks the display is in klm's but it's clearly got mph on the outer ring of numbers.
Clearing this up would be ideal.

    Joe.

if the speedo goes up to 90 or 100mph its a replacement speedo face, and the odo will still read in km's

if the speedo goes up to 160 its an original km's speedo thats been chipped to read in mph, in this case the odo will read in miles.

sometimes dealers leave a document in the car saying the odo has been wound back to read the right miles for the km's covered, others just leave the covered distance in km's and then the distance covered since import is in miles and you have to work out total miles yourself.

    simples..

Its looks like it's been converted using a replacement face if its got a duel marked speedo and the odometer will be still be recording in KMH.

I too am picking one up Tuesday with a speedo marking MPH round the outside with km's on the inside.

The PO thinks the trip is in KM's, super easy to check once I have it.

So I assume i'st a new face although not a sticker as that would be so easy to spot at night.

I'm a bit nervous as if it's miles that get to be a serious mileage....

They're recording km's til they reach these shores, so if its a fresh import the reading will likely be true (clocking aside).

Once here, depending on the speedo type, they can be converted either with a new face (mechanical speedo - ODO will continue to clock up kms) or a conversion chip (electronic speedo - ODO will then read miles).

Easy to check before you buy. Take a satnav, drive a straight road and compare speed / distance with the speedo / odo.

It really is as easy my first post.

look at the speedo, if it goes up to 160 your odo is reading in miles, if it goes up to 100, the odo will be reading in kms.

Personally I wouldn't pay any attention to an imports alleged milage.

              Cheers guys,

Yeah, there are two I'm looking at that both appear to be 75 to 80k on them and in both cases the owners have since said that the face is converted to miles but they believe the odo is still clocking up in K's.

Cool. I might have to go shopping this weekend.

Yeah, obviously, the speedo has to come out to change the face. Whilst there (being criminal aside), you may as well wind the odo back a few K. Ignore the mileage and check the condition.

                  Ok.

So original Jap speedos only went up to 160kmh/100mph.

Totally new mph speedo's (US surf or UK 4runner I assume) went up to 160mph 260kmh.

                  Am I right?

                    Speedo Mod

conversion chip (electronic speedo - ODO will then read miles)

Andy,re the above thread,do you know if a Gen 2 (3L)can be converted with the chip you mentioned, and if so where can I get it done
I would prefer the odo to resd in miles rather than kph,Regards ,Alan

If it has the electronic speedo, yes. No idea re. where to get it done, but you can buy the chips on eBay.

                        Yes and No..

2nd Gen UK 4Runner speedo go up to 110mph.

BAck to Surf speedos, its pretty simple.

Replacement dashes go up to 100mph, it just spaced so the needle points in the right place for MPH, so the odo is unaffected and still reads in Kms covered.

When you fit the speedo chip, you keep the 160kmph dash face, they just paint out the k so it says mph, and chip alters the input so the needle and odo move correctly (roughly!) for mph on the gauge and miles covered on the odo.

If you want to get more involved..

If the speedo is ''chipped' to read in mph, the importer should work out the current kilometers covered to miles, and wind the clocks back so you can easily see what distance the truck has covered in miles from day one.

If they are lazy you'll have a truck that has covered, say 60,000kms, then from 60k on it will have been reading in miles, so you'll have to work out what 60,000kms are in miles, then add that to the miles covered since the odo read 60k.

So you can see its almost to much to expect them not to scrub a few more thousand miles off, seeing as the dash is in bits in front of them, and you don't know whats happened to it in Japan so I tend to not get to excited over milages claimed on Surfs when buying.

Of course, if you get (and you should if you are the first buyer after import, and have to register it in the UK) the Japanese de-registration certificate, then the end mileage/kilometerage is marked on the form before it leaves Japan, so you can compare the reading s before and after import to check for clocking-related naughtiness.
It does help if you read kanji, mind, or know a man who can

I found when comparing to GPS that my speedo is worryingly accurate - when the speedo says 30mph, it is doing a true 30mph according to the GPS, so no slack there for staying inside Gatso'ed urban speed limits.

Right enough you really must be at it.

My surf has done 70k, but no! wait! it has had a replacement engine. So you posted to tell the OP that you have a gauge that has the numbers 117399 on it.

Luke I am not buying it any more, you can't be this retarded. It has to be a setup.
