  • Disc question / Summit racing

Thinking of ordering some things from Summit Racing.

Is it worth buying grooved front brake disks? And would these fit inside my 15" rim? Why are some so expensive?

Basically, Bearmach have said they wont ship me a ES2000 because they wont just buy one and they dont have enough orders in at the mo to fill their container. Fair enough. Summit Racing do them for $60 plus tax / shipping. So was thinking of better discs and brake pads that dont cover my rims in dust. Is it worth it? Will I great greater longevity out of them over standard?

discs are pretty heavy - the shipping from the us in a plane wont be cheap.remember theres import robbery to pay on top.

buy a rough trax set and use some of the shipping cash on an hours labour in a machine shop and get them drilled here if thats the look you're after - i used to ball mill and drill all my own discs in the mk 1 an 2 escort days.

Grooved disks will produce more brake dust than standard ones Tony. They certainly wont reduce the mess on your wheels.

And you will also get a brake shudder under heavy braking.

Oh well thats no good then! I did wonder if the holes acted like a cheese grater or not!

What about EBC pads or something like that?
Gary gave me an idea though, wonder if Sutton Rebore or similar would drill the discs IF I ever wanted that. They do work like engine boring and machine work etc.
                Thanks for that Mark!

I asked about this on here a while back and the consensus was that I'd be better to simply use genuine Toyota discs and pads, change fluid and possibly change to goodrich braided hoses. My brakes do get too hot for my liking and have faded badly at times so may consider getting drilled discs when I change or decide that it's time to drive slower and save the cash!!

A friend of mine who drives fast shoe boxes swears by EBC greenstuff pads but not tried myself.

                  Cheers

I'm just worried about motorway braking. If for exampl I'm traveling at 80 and need to do an emergency stop then I know with the 33" tyres on there is 2" more of a turning force on the discs produced by the road.
I already have braided hoses as I had to fit longer lines for the lift.

I suppose on a plus, the extra drag produced by turning the truck into a moving brick (or very large shoe box) might negate the extra torque produced by the larger tyres.. Would rather have good brakes though.

If I did buy new discs from Summit, then would a 4x4 1993 US spec 4Runner be the same as my 1993 4x4 Surf? If not any idea how I could find out or cross reference part numbers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dont think grooved disks will help you stop quicker for a single stop, they are just more reliable in situations where you're braking hard again and again as they de-glaze the pads reducing fade.

I wouldn't think you'll be emergency braking from illegal speeds in a 2 tonne wobbly old truck that often will you?

Yep, speeding along, texting with one hand, eating a chicken sandwich with the other, steering with their knees, above the legal limit in a two ton vehicle with standard brakes under heavier than what the brakes were meant for, wheels/tyres.

That chicken sandwich is never going to go a way is it?
