  • What to do... mechanical spannery folk

Vicki's Polo has developed a rumble - sounds a bit like deep exhaust resonance, but its wheel speed related rather than engine, so it isn't exhaust or before gearbox noise.

Checked rear wheel bearings at lunchtime, and they 'feel' ok. Yet to check front bearings as had no time so will check tomorrow. What other stuff would make such a noise? Thinking CVs as I have felt the odd clunk on full lock - but the deep resonance isn't what I'd expect CVs to sound like. If not, a bearing somewhere on the output side of the gearbox?

Anyway - if it looks expensive, it may be a case of stretching it til the next MOT, assuming its safe to do so - and then looking for something else.

She'd like either something Golf sized, or a small 4x4. I wouldn't have any issues with another VW, but I also have my eye on RAV4s. Before you go 'ohhh no good offroad blah blah', she isn't into that. She just likes the higher up driving position and roominess. She doesn't want a Surf as its too big for her.

So, anyone have any suggestions :-

    1) What to look for on the Polo with respect to the noise.

    2) Suggestions for good solid mid sized car, or small 4x4.

One caveat - it MUST be automatic.

    1. Sounds like a bearing to me.
    2. How much $ you got?

Just because the bearings feel ok don't really mean they are. Dies it lessen/increase when going round a left or right hand bend?

Without even waiting for the reply, Andy, you ask this question about once year and I suggest a Honda HRV and you say that's a good idea and then.....

Hi Andy. Might be a gearbox bearing/s. Drive the car, and when you hear the noise, put the clurch in and out, listening for a change in loudness / tone. Are you anywhere near Kidderminster? If so, ask for some advice from Nigel at Nicol Transmissions.....Good luck....Mick.

It's the rear wheel bearings from the way you describe it, exactly the same symptoms as the Renault Clio we had.
They'll need pressing in/out by the way.

Yes, it does increase when turning ... errr ... left I think, and decrease when going right, which would make it left rear I suppose...

                Sancho, good idea.

Think I'll get her a Merc...

If you go round a left corner and the noise increases, its the right one...as going right takes a bit of load off it.

Booked in tomorrow at my local friendly back street mechanic.

I have several excuses not to DIY.

                      1) I dont have time at the mo.
                      2) I really really cant be ar5ed!

                          Good little car that is!

Despite the length of time she's had it, still only got 80k miles on it.

No, a member from here came and took it away for free. He was going to build a winch challenge truck from it I believe.
