Vicki's Polo has developed a rumble - sounds a bit like deep exhaust resonance, but its wheel speed related rather than engine, so it isn't exhaust or before gearbox noise.
Checked rear wheel bearings at lunchtime, and they 'feel' ok. Yet to check front bearings as had no time so will check tomorrow. What other stuff would make such a noise? Thinking CVs as I have felt the odd clunk on full lock - but the deep resonance isn't what I'd expect CVs to sound like. If not, a bearing somewhere on the output side of the gearbox?
Anyway - if it looks expensive, it may be a case of stretching it til the next MOT, assuming its safe to do so - and then looking for something else.
She'd like either something Golf sized, or a small 4x4. I wouldn't have any issues with another VW, but I also have my eye on RAV4s. Before you go 'ohhh no good offroad blah blah', she isn't into that. She just likes the higher up driving position and roominess. She doesn't want a Surf as its too big for her.
So, anyone have any suggestions :-
1) What to look for on the Polo with respect to the noise.
2) Suggestions for good solid mid sized car, or small 4x4.
One caveat - it MUST be automatic.
