Poxy Xbox dominating internet and off spring not listening

Can someone suggest a method of teach my know it all offspring that Xboxes eat bandwidth on the internet...Once he starts shouting at his mates when to duck or other such instances...When it takes ages to load pages up or download emails he wont get it into his thick head that its the feckin xbox thats slowing things down...even tho his hardwired port is through a 10meg hub and every body else is on the 20meg ports.....I need a 1 meg hub to strangle his demands down otherwise next step will be the 10lb hammer.....Hes allready had the his mac address blocked from the wifi (shame) Plus he thinks we dont know he is on it till stupid o clock its a bummer when strange how his port gets unplugged at night cant think for the life of me how that happens.....

XBOX live doesnt use a great deal of bandwidth to be honest! What router do you have? Who is your ISP? Xbox uses no more than 100kbit/s So out of a 20mbit connection you are looking at an xbox using 0.1mbit. This is xbox live, and does not account for downloading content such as game demos and such which will of course use as much bandwidth as available.

It could be that your router is not capable of maintaining TCP state information for the amount of connections going through the router. Cheap routers suffer from this and as a concequence require rebooting often!

Another factor, is a poor quality ISP. I have frequently witnessed "high speed fibre" e.g. Virgin Media providing poor service due to over subscribtion in the area. Because of the contention that can happen at busy times, a 20mbit service would be more like 1mbit/s actual speed once packet loss, retransmissions and tcp slow start is accounted for!

Get yourself a Draytek Vigor 2820 router and use its Quality of service features to limit the bandwith for the xbox ip addres or port numbers.
