  • Dumb ass question now

I am wanting to fit an ATF cooler.I know where the oil trans pipes are but which one is the return and which is the flow. Also on the rad which is inlet and which is outlet.I may just try without going through the rad and just use the cooler so would it matter which way the pipes went onto the oil cooler

Hi Stormy, There are no filters in line so it wouldn't make a difference would it? Don't take any notice of what I say though 'cos I know nothing!

When I do my winch bumpers I'm thinking of sticking one in the front then running my fuel through the bottom of the rad as a preheater

I just need to get mine cooled as much as possible as when towing and going up hills the temp climbs right up or if i am in very slow moving traffic.I may check the Visc fan aswell to make sure thats ok.
I just don't want to take any chances with this truck and want to keep things as cool as possible

Rich just pop off the 2 pipes from the rad and get someone to start her up and switch off quickly. You'll soon find out which pipe is which (how I double checked mine)

Nope, which ever way suits you.
It's basically just a tube with cooling fins.

is the 3gen rad like a 2 gen? as in it has the bottom hose outlet partley blocked by the internal oil cooler, if i ever get another surf my first mod will be to get rad reworked without a cooler biult into it and fit an aux cooler.
manuel surfs don't have a cooler in the rad and from what i know manual surfs don't get hot.
Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

yea it has the cooler in the bottom aswell.By the looks of it the oil cooler is looking smaller than the 2nd gen one as the 3rd gen rad is narrower and the bottom cooler part don't look as big either.I will find out once i get one fitted on the difference in size of the cooler section

Rich, make sure you feed the flow from the gearbox into the new ATF cooler, then out and into the existing one before connecting back to the gearbox return. That way you'll get the cooling you need but also, if it gets too cool, the flow through the bottom of the radiator will re-heat it enough so that it's still at about the optimum temperature for the gearbox.

The additional cooling is only really effective when the gearbox is working extra hard anyway, like when towing up hill but always useful to have.
