    If you have the centre diff (AWD) option, there will be a 4WD pattern display between the speedo and tacho showing four green lights and a centre orange light similar to this........

      yes i have that display, so it is all wheel drive as i thought,
      but i wonder what is giving the feeling of transmission windup when i was turning slowly the other week.

      Bit worried about sticking it in 4x4 to see if still doing

        As long as the orange light wasn't on it should be OK.
        You were probably 'feeling' the drive being transmitted to the front wheels.
        If the orange light is illuminated, it means the centre diff is locked and thats only for loose/slippery surfaces.

        What position is/was the transfer lever in at the time?
