Just because they do work on a computer, doesn't mean they are any more or less valuable than, for example, a 'refuse technican'. They certainly don't make a better living just because of their creativity.
I work as a Builder, but would never say to anyone that was a photographer or graphic designer or any other that they do not know what it is to work for a living.

I never said they dont work for a living.
I suppose my opinion is pretty deepset about the changes in the country over the last 50 years or so.
We were once an innovative, world leading country with a world beating engineering base which valued the skills of people who invent, design and build stuff to sell across the world. Nowadays, we dont do that. We are a nation of people who sell products we buy elsewhere, we sell financial 'solutions' (whatever the hell they are) which end up breaking the banks and putting us all in the shit. We sell Chinese stuff for the Chinese.
Creativity is wonderful if it leads to something worthwhile. However, I dont count a fancy CGI advert for a bank as 'creative'.
Universities churn out kids with rubbish degrees all heading into these 'creative' posts I'm on about. The hard degrees are no longer favoured because they're... well... hard! These are the skills we need (as a country) to be leading edge in manufacture. Not producing film of pretty people showing what next weeks deodorant does to make you more popular with women.
Where's the iPad come from? USA design? I bet whats inside comes from China, Taiwan etc. We couldn't do it. We dont have the skills. All the mobile phones? Same thing. We dont have the skills or the drive to do it because we're all too ###### lazy and in general too thick.
Skills? Work ethic? Nah, why bother? There's an app for that. (wow, see what I did there?)

Well chaps I started in engineering installing big bits of broadcast plant, my qualifications from uni were in electronics, working with 11Kv etc.. those were the days.
I left engineering because sadly I felt it was going no where, In the UK engineering is seen to be something dirty. Promotion is not in engineering Its in office bull, I have seen people who could not use a toaster rise in grade...some real idiots, but great at self promotion and claiming credit for others work.
I respect all jobs, weather your any good or not is a different matter...
I really admire whats left of the manufacturing industry in the UK... those companies have their work cut out just to survive.
iPad for me is a slick well engineered piece of kit... performance wise it flies, its got good battery life and a nice interface. Apple sold 2 million of these in 6-7 weeks, so I think its here to stay...__________________

I still maintain that very few people actually NEED one though. What did you all do before iPad? Nothing? Or did you somehow manage without the shiny new latest and greatest?
There's nothing wrong with wanting shiny stuff (I do too, but not generally bits of I.T trinketry), but please folks, dont dress it up as though you cant live without it!Cutting steps in the roof of the world

All we really 'need' is shelter, food and water......everything else is just to make life a bit nicer, so an iPad is no more a requirement to life than a kettle.Alan

Well agreed, if i lost a kidney I could not graft on an iPad to do the same job,
its a tool... a very nice tool. Weather you use it for work or play...
For me I see people carrying around heavy laptops, for me iPad is a better option..
I will buy one, shortly... its up to the individual if they see a need...__________________

we dont "NEED" the vast majorityof things in life, however as human beings we are self aware and mostly seek betterment. We do many things not because they are easy but because they are hard and worthwile.
Apple is an inovative company with slick marketing but also with well engineered products.
I like the look of the Ipad and will probably get one in a year or two when my current laptop needs replacing.
The only thing I personally dont like about apple products is that they have some compatibality issues with the sort of software I use. From AutoCad to ANSYS, which run better on microsoft OS. MatLab looks ok on AppleIf it can be broken it can be fixed

Can proper, full size, software run on an iPad? Or is it just a big iPhone, with Apps to display things rather than software to create them? Does it have a CD/DVD ROM Drive? Does it have 500Gb of storage?Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Apple have stated its for consumption of media, not creation, if you need a mobile platform for creating - buy one of their laptops... they don't see it as a replacement for a laptop.
regarding storage - they are pitching this towards Cloud computing.. you don't need to carry everything around on a big drive...__________________
