  • Yotatech forum racist warning (banned)

I've recieved a "racial slur" warning at Yotatech for shortening the word Japanese Import to Jap Import.
I really didn't think or associate the three letter word to be a racial slur. I've seen it used plenty of times before on websites. Is it racist?

Obviously I will remember not to shorten Japanese again as I have obviously offended someone! But also receiving a warning as a new member of a forum is a little bit of a surprise too!

Dont worry about it, the yanks are ultra cautious about getting sued, i used the term "Jap" before, dont see owt wrong with it, i aint offended at being called a "brit" or even "limey", honkey, whitey or what ever,
but you put an add on telly showing a cadbury's cream egg in Gandi's turban then whoa!!!! thats a whole other noise!! those feckers take offence at the least thing, odd really as they (the muslims) regularly run anti jewish cartoons in their papers,

Sounds to me like somebody WANTED to be offended by it.

What is the difference between saying Jap, Brit, Aussie, etc...?

Tell them grow a thicker skin!

Whatever you do, don't say that the truck feels a bit NIPpy! (Apart that this would be a total outright lie with most Surfs!)

And certainly never say that the weather is "a bit Pearl Harbour today" (ie there's a nip in the air!)

Damn - I worked with scousers for too long. "The Geeeeermans bombed our chippy" etc...

It make you laugh doesn't it, PC gone mad.

We get called Brits by the Americans and Poms by the Australians......bothered?...N OT!

Shorten other Natonalitys names such as Pakistan and your racist, oh well such is life.
If at first you don't succeed.........give up.

Gooks was the Yanks term for the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war I believe. Not sure if it applies to a wider audience than that. I certainly remember seeing the likes of John McCain using the term during his presidential campaign when talking about his capture & torture during the Vietnam war.

The Duke of Edinburgh probably overstepped the mark somewhat (nothing unusual there) when he was caught calling the Japanese "slanty eyed little #######s" but I suppose that sort of thing reflects the attitudes of a generation really.

I'm amazed at some of the apparently racist things my dad (in his mid 70s) says from time to time but it's not like he means any offence by anything - it's just how people were in less enlightened times and it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks...

Instead of doing any work today, do some searching on Yotatech, looking for words like Oz, Aussie, Kiwi, Yank,Brit, and any others you can think of. Note and report them all.
I would also ask them just why it is OK to abbreviate Toyota into Yota, when its not OK to abbreviate Japanese. Maybe even some explanation as to why abbreviating a country name is construed as racist.
Alternately you could take the huff and sulk and not visit for a few weeks. that would show them.
