I know what you mean about FAC's though - I held on to my pistols until the last minute but they got chopped up in the end. Robbing batsards gave me £6k but left me with £3k of gear that was unsaleable cos there was no market for it when they banned pistols

Yes my first 'service' weapon was my L1A1 (I still have my old cleaning kit)before I went on the stalking stuff , I had this impression that I would one day join the Hereford gun club (ha ha) it was one of the instructors who waxed lyrical on the fact that if you could stalk a deer you could hunt man so much easier, anyway woke up smelling coffee and settled into BAOR life !

did you go through the appeal process to get a better deal on your pay out ? all my re-loading gear ended up in France I went to the range and shot every round I had in my posession !

The point I made was about designation - John's military background means he was taught to call it a 7.62 ! And as for civvies not being allowed military rounds ...

      Bwaaaahaaaahaaaaa !

Go to Bisley on any weekend and you'll see shedloads of people putting RG 7.62x51 through their .308 win sporting rifles !

Before you fire back some crap I spent 22 years in the Regular Army AND I shot at international level as a civvy and a squaddie so go back to La La land and keep peddling the BS

For some reason Hereford held no attraction for me - not sure if it was the thought of all the phys or living in a hole in the ground for weeks on end ...

A mate went for selection and came back telling everybody he'd failed on fitness - he used to do the CFT in 45 mins carrying 65lb ... Strangely enough he was posted out within 4 weeks and didn't arrive at the unit he told everybody he was posted to !

The day before the ban on self loaders came into force we had a day on Short Siberia with a mates Garand - eight of us kept it firing continuously for around 1200 rounds, the barrel turned grey, the woodwork started steaming and then smoking. Horrible way to treat a rifle but it was getting cut up so ...

I appealed their first offer and produced a shedload of valuations - I got £250 for my £80 Mk VI Webley, a further £50 for the spare cylinder I paid £10 for and best of all they paid £1200 for my Caspian .45 - it only set me back £300 for the original gun and some spares but I did a lot of work on it to improve the accuracy and reliability. I've got a pile of gear they wouldn't pay out for.

13 years later I'm still BITTER about it all - shooting was something I was really good at and I turned down the chance to shoot for England cos I thought I'd have loads of time to do it when I left the Army ...

          • I worked there about 12 years ago, building a new, above ground blast chamber or whatever they call it. The actual site is like a ghost town, lots of small hangar like buildings with smashed windows. Everything happens underground apparently and the ground shakes now a then when they 'test' the bombs!
Cluster bombs are/were made there amongst other things.

              • ROF Glascoed is very cool looking on google earth,
I love all the embankments round every building, still a lot of cars and things around the place so people must still be using it.

Yeah is was like that when I was there, lots of vehicles but no people.
The only people we did see were in the canteen.

Very tight security there too, I didn't do myself any favours by turning up in a black Transit with Irish plates!

Sorry, I meant 'domestic' such as Wi-Fi (the Daily Mail's favourite).

I was trying to buy a site once that had overhead power lines above it. The agent told me that they had a report that said they were fine. I asked him for a copy and it did indeed seem to say that and that the magnetic fields from the wires were within safe levels.

The report also cited some work done by a professor at Bristol University whose research they were relying on. Being me, and knowing nothing of physics, I phone this professor to run the conclusions by him. Interestingly, he told me that his research firstly had nothing to do with power lines and that the safe levels he had given weren't the strengths that could cause childhood leukemia (which was my concern) but the levels at which you would expect to feel physical effects such as internal organs going wrong.

                        I didn't buy that site...

                        • I've measured emissions from a mobile phone at levels that I would consider comparatively 'high' against the levels measured 50m or so from a mobile phone mast. The old inverse-square law ensures you don't need to be too far from a mast for the levels to be pretty low.

Oddly, Joe Public moans about having cell masts nearby, but has no problem with having a mobile glued to the side of their head for hours on end.

We do 'radhaz' work as part of our EMC service. It's surprisingly hard to exceed european power density / field strength limits!
