  • Quick question

I noticed when i put my 3rd gen surf in 4H (4wd) there is a little more resistance to turn than if she was in 2wd. Is this normal? I dont mean going round a corner at 20/30 mph, i mean at very low speeds or say i was taking off & had the wheels turning, there seems to be more drag.
Ive started using the 4wd more due to the recent weather & ive noticed this.

Im probably just used to driving in 2wd?

You mean pressing the button on the transfer lever?

Mine doesn't feel any different to be honest, maybe it's because mine has low profile tyres????Who knows?

No i mean the way the vehicle itself tends to be less urgent to go round corners a very low speeds in 4H ie; when turning into a space in a car park.
I have 32" MT's by the way. Could they possibly increase the resistance when combined with 4wd?

My manual 3rd gen has been in 4wd for the last 5weeks can't say I notice a change in the weight of steering. Maybe it's all in your head because you see the wee green lights

If you would prefer normal tyres give me a shout. I have a 3rd gen just asking to be retired to Wales as a part exchange.

I have a couple of other vehicles with 'full time' 4WD option. and yes, it feels different through the steering to me.
            slightly heavier or more resistant.

              Hope this helps

Is the centre diff locked on the 3rd gen? (don't know if they have the switchable option)
May be because the floor isnt slippery enough to use 4wd really, and the wheels are unable to turn at different speeds to each other due to being locked together?
                Oh Nana, what's my name?

Yeah you could be on to something there. How do i know if centre diff is locked? Does the little center icon flash on & off or just stay on?

There is a definite difference between 2wd & 4wd when turning slowly. Its not much but its there alright.Or maybe im going mad.......again.
Surely the function of the center diff is to eliminate this issue?

Obviously i would have to have the center diff active to prevent something snapping?

The centre diff wont affect the steering, driving the front wheels will. to allow them to turn is the job of the front diff.
Unless you have lockers then you only have 1WD or 2WD anyway.
you are experiencing a bit of resistance due to the front wheel (s) being driven I would say.

The center orange light should be off. If it is on you have locked the centre diff and will experiance the same binding issue that 2 gens do.

The 3rd can use 4wd on any surface as long as it's on the button with 4 geern lights showing and the orange centre light off.

This is how ive been driving round for the last 2 weeks.

So you're saying the orange circle should not be on? Good thing i havent been driving around on dry tarmac.
