What exactly is un-locked standard 4wd for? Its a bit rubbish? Is it purely for on-road driving?
4H locked is fairly unstoppable & not for roads.
4 L is tank mode & obviously only for the deep sh1t.

I think 4H unlocked is for when your on wet or slippery conditions but not slippery enough for the centre to be locked. i.e. snowy roads. Or if you are parking in a carpark that is covered in snow. Or if your in the muddy stuff and need to turn sharply to get out and 4H Locked keeps dragging the front wheels or wont turn.
In february when it snowed bad, I drove 20 - 25 miles to work and then another 25 or 30 on the way back in the snow with 4WD locked on constantly. No problems.Oh Nana, what's my name?

Its THE best and safest option to tow trailers with on wet roads, and general driving on winter or wet roads, far better than a 2nd Gen or any part time 4WD truck.

No sorry what i meant is; compared to the other gear modes it gets upset if pushed? I suppose it depends on what surface your driving.
I was trying to go up a little mini-hill (8/9 ft high 50/55 degree sides) not to go over it, just to make sure the 4wd drive was working.
Had her in 4H un-locked & she wouldnt climb. Slipped it into locked 4H & up she went no bother till my towbar nudged the ground.
I presume in 4H un-locked because the diff allows varying speeds between the front & rear axle this is going to happen?
I should add the base of the hill was a frozen puddle.

Yup, the diff in the t/case will allow slip between front and back axles, thats how AWD works, its mostly for wet grass fields and general driving. Most full time 4WD trucks don't give you option of 2wd, even some UK Landcruisers, the nice thing about the 3rd Gen Multi Mode 4wd is you can put it in 2wd as well for normal driving. then AWD when it gets slippery, then true 4WD h or L ratio for offroading.4x4toys.co.uk - Keeping you on and off the road...
