  • Halfords Extreme Brilliance - MOT failure!!

Just got back from the MOT station (CROXDALE FAST FIT) with my failure note!!!!
It failed because the headlights, in his opinion, "emitted a light other than white".
The lamps were upgraded in the spring for Halfords Extreme Brilliance Bulbs - which as far as I'm aware a completely road legal.
Unfortunately i'm no longer in possesion of the original packageing, but I'm pretty sure the box did not say for off road purposses only.
Are these lamps illegal or is mr MOT being a tad over zealous and/or trying to make a few bob by selling me his own brand bulbs?
I've refitted the original lamps for retest tomorrow - but now i'm unsure wether to refit the Halfords Extreme Brilliance Bulbs.
    Everyone thinks I'm paranoid!!

It's at the testers discretion. What he says goes at the time.

With that in mind, when you look at the headlights do they look like they emmit a colour of some kind?

If you think about new cars and look at the ones that have HID bulbs (theyre sort of a bluey colour at certain angles). If you fit these to a surf, then that could be an MOT faulure because the Surf did not come with that type of bulb as standard, and can be taken that the bulb is emmitting a blue light - which is unlawful.

That being said, it all depends on how the MOT tester feels at the time. If your bulbs do not honestly shine any sort of blue then I would re-fit the originals for the MOT and change them back when you get home. And next year, chose another MOT tester.
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

      You could ask Halfords?

or if you want my view the MOT station are talking rubbish

Halfords do sell "Off road use" bulbs but it's stated clearly

      And then your bulbs

The tester's opinion is irrelevant. Halfords Extreme Brilliance lamps are 'E' marked and therefore 100% legal. Report the self richeous prat.

I think you will find the MOT testers discretion IS the MOT. Reporting him will get you know where. Feel free to do so if you wish...

Discretionary points are such things like how loud an exhaust system is. A standards marked component is not open to discretionary judgements. It meets all legal requirements, hence the testers personal opinion is irrelevant.

Here we go again... If the lights look blue, they are illegal full stop. Its down to the MOT tester to decide whether they look blue or not. I'm not sure where you would go if the lights had passed some test to say they are in fact road legal, but at the end of the day it is still down to the tester. It's their job.

Which parts of standards compliant do you not understand? Do you actually intend to troll or is it purely unintentional? I'd guess it's intentional, personally.

I agree, it sounds like your tester is going on a "power-trip" there mate.
Halfords extreme brilliance amitt a pure white light dont they? not blue.
There are street legal blue bulbs out there and halfords sell them,
Halfords also sell an "all weather" bulb that produce a rainbow affect light that is supposed to be better in rain, fog, snow etc
ALL OF WHICH ARE 'E' MARKED AND STREET LEGAL
(aslong as they dont exceed the rated wattage)
                      Hope this helps

The tester tests the vehicle to a set of standards, not his opinion. There is no discretionary latitude, something is either a pass or a fail, if the item is legal, it's a pass. Reporting him will be worthwhile, if VOSA get complaints about a tester, they are duty bound to investigate.

That's not for here mate. BUPA are more discrete than GPs if you need to use them.
