  • Howtos, Tutorials and the Search function

I've been keeping a folder on my website with Surf related things (links, documents and so on) and finally decided to open it up and make it more useful.

I've put the wikipedia software there now, so anyone can edit and put articles up there.

Apache kindly let me use one or two of his past posts as the basis for tutorials, but I'll be writing up anything I do and putting it on there too. If anyone else has a howto here and wouldn't mind me duplicating it there give me a shout.

Even if it doesn't take off, I thought it might be a decent starting place for a list of tutorials - 'how do I put roof bars on', 'how do I fit spots', 'how do I remove the rear heating matrix' etc. And if nothing else it's a useful place for me to leave things for myself

    Here's the link: http://www.monthofsaturdays.net/surf

Have a look, edit away and feel free to create new articles. There's a full list of the few things already on there (click "special pages" on the left side). You can create a new article by changing the name of the page in the address bar, then clicking 'edit'. Feel free to dump stuff there and I'll tidy it up.

Just on that point, no-one would mind if I passed copies of any the write-ups I have, (and those which I will be adding), put up on mine over to him, (if he wants them), for his site, would they?

Cheers Ian. Just thought it might be best to get the info on as many sites as possible. Codlord's site is a prime example of what having all the info in just one place only can do. The unexpected can always happen.

Did anyone ever manage to get hold of Codlord, btw? I know Trev's attempts went unanswered.

Cheers guys, Matt I'll get to work with a few of your articles too. As you say the more places that mirror info, and the more widely available it is, the better.

By the way Matt, what software does your site run on? Is it your own, or some content management system?

I was wondering about codlord too, he lives (or lived) not far from me but i dont have his address and cant quite remember what road it were, i went there once for the tyre valve covers, pity his site dissapeared, wether he pulled it or not i dont know, i do know he once had some trouble with some c### selling his info on ebay, on a disc format i think,

btw i wonder if the contributors to tech articles on the austrailian site would have any objections to their work being added to our info sites? dont see why not as it all non profiet makeing,

It's custom software I've written specifically for the site. Would it be easier for you if I did you a text dump of the articles, before they have any HTML formatting or suchlike applied? If so, I'll drop a plain copy of them in a (zip|tar, whichever is your preference) file on the server for you.

Aye, I've been trying to find out for a while as to whether he may have just let it lapse, lost interest or suchlike. It could possibly be that he's no longer able to see to it for some reason, (but hopefully not), but that was a good resource lost.

Regarding that disc that appeared on Ebay, I know some on here bought a copy of that CD. Would anyone still happen to have a copy of that disc knocking about?

The main reason I've been trying to get hold of him is to find out if he'd mind a copy of his site, (if I can get my hands on one), being put up as a (temporary|permanent) measure with his site being offline. I think I might just bite the bullet for the time being and put the info online if I can get hold of it. If he does reappear, I can double check with him then and whip it down if necessary. (I have to get my hands on a copy first though).

So, if anyone did ever buy a copy of that Ebay CD with all of the Surf info on it, any chance one could obtain a copy?

Not sure relating the tech articles specifically, but I am awaiting a reply from Reece at the moment regarding possibly copying some of their posts content over to the articles site, (authors permission also allowing). Didn't want to impinge on their tech site content itself, but I know their is a lot of suitable article info buried in their threads. Seems a shame not to filter it out and get it in easily findable/usable form. He might well tell me to p1ss off yet though.

Matt, don't worry about the text dump, it's easy enough to copy and paste from the site itself. Uploading images is the only slow bit but there's no way round that.

And by the way, thanks to whoever created the informative article entitled '####ing.' Very interesting read

(edit: actually doubt it was anyone on this site, much more likely someone searching for things to vandalise. Kept me entertained figuring out how to delete users/articles though!)

Sorry. I know I shouldn't laugh, but that tickled me.

It might be worthwhile creating a specific posting account and popping the login username and password details on here. It will be wide open to that type of abuse whilst ever guest posting is enabled/allowed. We can easily point people to the details when they want to pop something up there, (no pun intended in the above context ).

Aye, it can be a time consuming job, adding articles and suchlike, can't it. I normally have to set aside quite a bit of time when I do any updates to the articles/downloads section or suchlike. A seemingly simple thing can take five times longer than you'd think to actually complete.
