Dragging this back to your original overheating problem, have you got the standard autobox ATF oil cooler or have you got an additional or separate one installed. It's just a thought but I find the temp on mine tends to rise a fair bit if the autobox is under load. That pushes the excess heat through the oil cooler in the bottom of the radiator, which then re-heats the cooled water before it's had a chance to get back around the engine. And I have got an additional oil cooler fitted, as well as an accurate aftermarket temp guage, so I know exactly what mine is doing temp wise.
If yours is running on the standard set up then it could be that it's the hot ATF fluid that's causing your intermitent problems, rather than anything with the head or cooling system itself. Have you had the ATF fluid changed at any time recently? Is it still bright red or has it gone a dullish brown colour? If it is brown, then that might be a lot of your problem as once it's worn out it will not perform as it should.

Mine is a manual transmission so unfortunatly that couldn't be an issue - but many thanks for the reply/help.How can I be lost when I've got no where to go
