God i'd have to dig it out to have a look, but it works like a strap you would use to hold something down on a trailer, it is quite tough to open up, there should be a slide on the rachet that you pull up so the teeth can spin freely & the cable then pulls out, watch your fingers.
Not wanting to p1ss on your chips but from what I remember when doing a lot of reading on recovery those cable pullers are not the greatest and have a tendency to break at the wrong moment with the obligatory whipping cable/ bits of internals flying about the place.
Although it says 4 ton I think that is for pulling whereas they are rated 2 tons for lifting which I think is the more significant rating to look at in terms of recovery.
A Surf with nothing in weighs around 2 tons, add the extra of being stuck in mud/ on an incline/ behind an obstruction and you can easily be talking about 6-8 tons.
If you aren't using something that is correctly rated to take the right strain it can get messy. I'm not saying it wont work but when it comes to the strains you are using in recovery I think its worth using the proper kit (recovery is by far the most dangerous part of offroading)
I know some use them but personally if you want a winch alternative I would get either a properly rated Tirfor or Brano http://www.difflock.com/offroad/bowyer/brano.shtml hand winch (cost hundreds but you can find them at farm auctions for £50+ or the bay for around £100 sometimes) They work very well, last forever and unlike vehicle mounted winches you can use them form any direction.
