the reason i have tried to start a deicated thread for lifts (as they are the most commonly asked questions) is to please everyone. it will please any moaners and it will also please new members and make life for them easier.
      everyone's a winner baby.
no we dont have to do anything. if people wana ask questions over and over again and in the wrong sections then thats fine. we are all on here to help each other not to criticise. afterall im a prime example! i just ask coz i get bored of searching!
but theres no harm in doing this. i havent decided to do this because im ####ed off at people asking the same questions etc etc. ive done this to make peoples lives easier.
It is a good idea what you've done mate.

Now, if i can only remember how i find the link too it.
If its not broke don't fix it.

You'll figure something out once you tidy it up and take the conjecture out.

I did ask a long time ago that if anyone does a write up to email it to me and i would put in the write ups section on the main web site.

I do try to move any post i see in the wrong section but that means I have to read every single new post and do miss some.

Will look in to editing the welcome email new members get once they register high lighting the search feature and the FAQ section.

If you think of any more FAQ that could be put in the FAQ section be constructive and drop me a line along with a link to a thread that answers the question fully and I will add it to the FAQ section.

I get many emails from newly registered members that are not familiar with forums etc and struggle to do the basic of things on the forum. So can see why some put a post up, that to them is a new question but has been posted or asked many times before.

I also get many emails of thanks as to how helpful and friendly members on here are and would hate to think that after reading this post they would feel they will get shot down incase they post a question that has been asked before and simply not post or use the forum due to that.

Reading through this thread there are some good ideas. Erring on the side of personal experience i have found the search button very handy but however because there is so much info it isn't very specific and it can take a long time to wade through the info sometimes conflicting! but if you bear with it you get there in the end.
Also when i first started using the site i missed the stickies because i didn't know what a sticky thread was (thought thats what you got when you left a sweet in your pocket lol) So before anyone shoots me for going on about it i think the button idea is a good one i.e linking sites (Aussie site/Matts) and also to the files on the homepage i.e changing a cv boot, which always seem to be missed, maybe instead of writing loads of threads on subjects get a list of the ones that have/req doing write it up in pdf or something then upload the files, so when someone new joins, on their arrival email, just include the links to

                Servicing
                Changing belts
                4x4 problems
                Which tyres
                Swapping a radio
                Lifts
                4x4 spares
                Breakers

Instead of them just posting and as someone had said before...... essentially not everyone is pc literate and if its staring them in the face to click on it they cant really miss it.... but there is always someone.........usually me..... lol

I think it's the search button's, searching powers that are to blame.
It only searches for the first word entered thats more than three letters long.

I will look in to its searching function to see if can be made more specific.

That's your fault, not mine. I didn't ask you to do it, you did it of your own volition.

I didn't mention punctuation either. And why should I kill myself?

I meant tidy it up as in take out the duplication, conjecture and errors. That's all. If it's going to be a 'How to' it has to be 100% correct, what you've written isn't.

What you've done is a good starting point for an article, it has a long way to go before it is finished though. Think about it this way, if it were a presentation, how long would it take to present? Once you have the time in minutes, you can work out (roughly) the preparation time. One minute of presentation takes about one hour of preparation.

As for Grammar and punctuation, the article has to be perfect, otherwise it makes the forum look amateurish.

This is constructive criticism, and advice, not pi$$ taking. I hope you chose to accept it and any help offered from me or the others on here.

Is the function customiseable? If it's not, maybe adding a Google site search button would be better?

Are you now, or have you ever been a teacher, or are you a grammer and accuracy guru? - if not, you may have missed your calling...

I think what he's doing is good, and it's nice to see someone doing instead of moaning that it isn't there, although a little multi tasking would have helped on the breakfast front - but I agree with you that it needs to be right - do it in Word or something first, check it over with someone for a critique (as has happened) and then edit, tidy and post once done....

I would find these things (and have in the past) very useful to print off and refer back to outside with hands covered in gunge, and if it's wrong or confusing, it doesn't help the amateur spannerist like me....

If it's worth doing, it's worth spending time on it and getting it right...so keep up the good work, let's see your progress and we are all happy to help get it right so it benefits us all...

                                Nope...

A few years ago, when my employer shed 2,000 jobs, I was planning to be a College lecturer. Didn't lose my job in the end, but I sometimes wonder if I'd have been better off with the career move?
