    • wow what a tread .

i shoot and have for over 25 years , most of it now is pest control .
do i enyoy it , yes i do , i would not do it if i did not .

if i dont eat what i shoot i know many friends that will and as all of the other shooters will tell you , it is about managment and keeping them under control
not killing every last one .

i dont fish , not my thing , i shoot thats what i am good at and gone are the days when knob heads roamed the country side shooting at anything that moved .

i still remeber my first fox ( 24 years ) made me sick and i still feel a small pang in the pit of my stomach every time but in early spring when the farmer has paired up all the ewes and lambs in one field and six or seven are dead the next morning , i soon loose that pang .

the British farmer has a hard job and gets raped by tescos and asda , and all the free range farms have more shooters than any other , a battery farm never has a fox problem so next time you eat free range think how many fox got shot protecting it .

trying to explain what i do will never work as most people just dont get it ,
just like all the anti 4x4 groups , its not what they do so it must be stopped.

i support the british farmer and i am proud of that and to add i have lost a few shoots as the farmer topped himself as he could no longer compete with cheap imports and was about to loose his farm and it happens all the time so sorry if i shoot some rabbits or fox but i am not sorry for the hundreds of grey squirrels i have shot but am blessed for the few reds that i have had the honhour to see in the wild .

you get it or you dont its that simple .

      john
      i bust things ,, it a skill i have ,,( need help?)

        • Very interesting thread this one, so thought i would add my tuppence worth.
Killing for fun i cannot abide, do not understand how people can get enjoyment out of killing a harmless creature. Farmers and pest control, understandable.
Will tell you abit about what happens in civilised europe. Here in Greece the hunting season starts on the 10th September, and goes all the way round to March. The law here is ignored and it is not unuseal to see the police shooting with them. There is hardly anything left to shoot here, have never seen a rabbit or hare, and we live very rural. We have big arguements with the hunters here, they are supposed to keep a minimum of 400 meters from any houses, but never do. They will throw rocks into bushes and shoot whatever comes out, we had some hawks and owls, with baby owls as well last year, now dead, ilegal but they do not care, every year we see large groups of at least 10 people shooting anything that moves. When we tell them the law and the fact they should not be around here, we get the same answer, we shoot what we want, in the 4 years we have been here we have seen the Greeks destroy wildlife with no thought of the future.
Last year one pointed his shotgun at me and said maybe i shoot you, my reply, very polite of course, was it would be a bit hard with your shotgun shoved up your a**e and a surf on your head.
Now in the English language papers all we hear are people moaning about the lack of wildlife, these are Greeks saying this, the same ones who kill without a thought. There was a small coloney of black bears on a wildlife reserve just outside Athens, 3 more were shot last year, and all the Greeks say is, it is our right to shoot what we like. Civilised, not in my view.
How many people in the UK as well as the rest of Europe have the same mind process, conservation, all for it. Shoots done properly, no problem. The trouble comes from the small minority of people, or large where i live who have no respect for anything that lives or breaths.
          Rant over.

          • Well put Paul! my thoughts exactly, many "forign" country's have little enough regard for their fellow humans so it's understandable they dont give a f##k about animals,
Too young to die and too old to give a toss

One of the problems is that when they come here, they have the same attitude.

Wiggy may remember this one. A few years ago, a group of Italians went to Islay for some properly organised, in season, shooting. On their way back to their digs after their day shooting, they spotted some geese, got out of their car and shot them. They were someone's pet geese roaming around in their private garden! The Italians didn't see this as an issue.

Paul I have a good mate who runs a small bar in Lindos Rhodes, he shoots and fishes. The story I get from him is very different in his part of Greece, shoot somthing out of season and you are sent off the Island ! The Police are very strict in his area. Maybe your local plod are corupt

                • AMAZING, Bio only wanted a bit of land to shoot on & it turns into a full scale debate.

This kind of subject is always going to be scrutinized but it is good to see that most people can see both sides of the story.

If your ever up this end bio you can come & have a "CONTROLLED" shoot with me on the farms i shoot on.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Yup wasnt at home at the time but heard about it.... same problem as greecysurf said about over here but not quite as bad.... completely different attitude.... cant quite come to terms with it sometimes e.g the way they treat animals over here domestic included.....guess just a different culture...... still got some chavs to shoot over here too though .... most have evolved because they are now on scooters .....must be evolving! bit off subject but there is some good stalking to be had on Jura now but its not cheap and its a bit of a treck to get there usually comes in a package with fishing included but you eat what you catch/shoot. and before anyone starts the deer do need culling.

                            • Hi Webbo, if its a tourist island, small communities that rely on outside money, then i can believe that it is differant. Yes the police are corrupt, most institutions in Greece are. One of the reasons there are so many accidents here is ,you pay the instructor 150 to 300 euros, and after you have learn't the basics they do the rest for you. My Greek friends wife done it this way, not much of her car left without a dent or bit missing. Hunting here is bad news, and Wiggy depending on the parts of Italy you go to, it will be the same. Good areas where people respect there surroundings and wildlife and then the areas where its desolute. Fishing here is done with dynamite quite alot, not a lot left to fish here, so we can sit on our veranda and see the boats out to sea and then a couple of seconds later the muffled bang. Sometimes i dispair to see what the human race is doing. Its a pity the good ones, ie the ones who do it properly can't hunt the MALAKAS who ruin things for normal people. Bio i can understand what you are saying, might not agree with it, but that is your choice, and at least you took the time to think about it. Popeye agree with chav hunting, should be made a national sport.
Anybody wants a translation of malaka, begins with w ends in r and has 4 letters missing.
Plenty of land, unfortunatly no rabbits.

                              • Top thread!

Been pestering the local butcher for some bunny - cos I really like it. The bunnies the butcher gets are locally shot or ferreted (?)

Haven't got a gun, but if I did have, and was a good enough shot to kill rather than just blow bits off, then I would do it myself.

Vicki and Neve aren't so keen because they see bunnies as furry and cute (whereas pigs, cows, chickens etc aren't?). I dont get it meself

Woodzie, I applaud your attitude of doing this to feed your family while you're out of work - gimme some burgers!
