I never said I wouldn't if it was necessary. I would have absolutely no qualms in doing so, if the need arose. There is no necessity, however, so I have that choice.

Personally, I believe the 'we eat what we kill' response is merely a way of trying to appease peoples opinions. If you do it Ian, that's your choice. As it is the choice of any other individual. There is no need to appease anyone. If other people don't like the fact that people shoot non-protected species, tough. The same as I choose not to, others have every right to choose to do so.

Just for the record and only speaking for myself, its nothing about appeasing others. As you say, if they don't like it, tough. However, getting to the decision to kill was hard, yet simple for me. Can't say I enjoy the killing but wouldn't feel justified eating meat if I wasnt willing to carry it out. Just how my head works is all.

However, I would much rather be honest about the thought process I went down to get there rather than the 'I shoot things, if you dont like it, lump it' approach. My way means at least people will see its a considered decision based on some kind of consideration and will maybe consider their own views as it seems that you have. By the same rationale I would always rather explain my reasoning for driving a child-killing/planet-killing 4x4 than just tell a moaner to poke it.
Call it some mild version of logic explaining tourettes but I cant help it

I don't shoot or fish because I don't have to, I'm quite happy to pay someone else to do it for me. But if push came to shove, I'd have to do the killing myself, but it's not a biggie and not likely to happen.

As far as shooting ability goes, I'm a very good shot with proper rifles and not bad when shooting clays with a 12 bore, so at least I know I'll not starve!
