Anybody in Kent/Surrey/Sussex know anyone with land with a surplus of rabbits?

So you mainly mean checking you have the stomach for it rather than the skill? Just remember a simple fact. Dead is dead. No use getting all mushy about the fact.

It's not a case of whether you have the nads to do it or not, merely whether you have the inclination. It's a mental choice, not an ability.

What i'm saying Matt, is i believe i have no qualms about offing a rabbit, BUT i can't be certain until it actually comes to the oint where i pull the trigger!

Shooting rabbits in the dark----Not something everyone can do!!
I know my shooting is reasonably good (static targets) but i can't recall ever killing an animal in any way, so i wont know til i try wether i have the cahonas for it or not!!!!!!!

Quite right, a couple of the keepers I go lamping with are legends, the head keeper is 83 and he is wealth of knowlege. Most of, if not all of the skill with lamping is the guy behind the lamp he will pick shots out for me call to them, and can even give very accurate distances for the rifle in the dark.

When I go out on my own I use one of them new remote control lights mag mount on the roof.

Webbo, are these any good? Often wondered about them but some people have said they are a bit slow to move, how do you find it?

I know what you meant. What I mean is just pull the trigger. If you think about it you never will. You can feel guilty afterwards, but don't think about it when you take aim. If you feel crappy afterwards, make it your first and last foray. If not, you'll quite probably be doing it again.

Personally, I wouldn't dream of shooting anything these days, but that is from conscious choice.

I never said I wouldn't if it was necessary. I would have absolutely no qualms in doing so, if the need arose. There is no necessity, however, so I have that choice.

Personally, I believe the 'we eat what we kill' response is merely a way of trying to appease peoples opinions. If you do it Ian, that's your choice. As it is the choice of any other individual. There is no need to appease anyone. If other people don't like the fact that people shoot non-protected species, tough. The same as I choose not to, others have every right to choose to do so.

Neal, yes they are slow. if you want to follow anything at pace its hard, but I have found that when I'm on my own its a compromise holding a large lamp and a rifle can't be done.
If your lamping rabbits its fine as 9 times out 10 you will light them up and they will sit there as you well know. But if you are chasing Charlie its another matter, so yes I would recommend them I got mine off EBAY if you can't find the item I will try and find the seller for you......Bright Eyes

I must admit , i shoot on the local vinyard as the rabbits do so much dammage , we eat them , my parents eat them and so do alot of the locals as bunny burgers , they are vermin and do need control and it was law for the land owner to control the rabbits Belive it or not, so i help the country way of life , Pigeons and other vermin count too as well as the Mink that those silly Animal right idiots releasted into the wild to slaughter our own wildlife.

On that basis then I might give it a go, cheers for that. A lot of the time I'm with someone else anyway but that would certainly help when I'm not.

Evening all

Outside chance but I've lost one of my shoots and could reallly do with somewhere close to home that has a rabbit problem they need controlling.

I'm fully insured, used to shooting in places with livestock etc. etc.
So anyone know any farmers that might be worth me speaking to?

As I know this can be an emotive subject, so for the record this sort of shooting is something it took me a long time to decide to do but having been asked by a farmer friend if I would help them sort their rabbits out I did a lot of thinking and came to the conclusion that if I wanted to eat meat I should be prepared to kill it.

Eventually promised myself that if I wasnt prepared to do exactly that, that I would go vegetarian. Ever since, I occasionally go shooting and eat everything I shoot. Can't say I enjoy killing things at all (though the outdoorsy bit and challenge is enjoyable) but it does feel better than buying meat form the supermarket thats been brought up in the conditions we've all seen on TV.

How I started off "Not that you are starting" was to go to the Farmers knock on there doors be polite, just ask the question. Set youself a day plan your farmers dress smartly camo gear not recommended they say. And when on a particular shoot always take the Farmer a nice bottle of Port at Xmas, this is how I do things and have more land to shoot now than I ever have done. Just paid my subs on a very nice Duck shoot on a small lake 2 miles from my house very well run £100 a season .

On about pigeon, where I grew up there used to be, (they've been renovated into houses now), a building that had one of the old pigeon coups, (can't remember the proper term), at the top of the building for cajoling pigeons into roosting there for keeping a plentiful supply for the pot across at the main house, in its time. Can still remember it being knee deep in pigeon crap when I was growing up, before they renovated, (ballsed up), the buildings.
