I know its rude to ask but plweeeeaaaaaasssseeee say someone else thinks it could use tweaking at least.
I mocked up a quick alternative as an idea, well, actually i tried a few colours.

Irrelevant of colour choice i think a key point is removing the intrusive navigation pane, you dont need two links to the calendar when you are looking at the forum (obvious example), 'contact us' three times, two different undistinguished FAQ links and so on . The banner provides ample space for a smaller more relevant and useful nav menu.

Anyways, thought it was worth consideration.

I wouldn't go there if I were you. The last 'feature suggestion' created a quirk which caused some grumpiness for a short while until it was reverted.

I know there is a certain fear of what was the future, has been the present and is now the past.
None of what i did in those styles has anything special, the menu is positioned by css, the forum software the latest bar one. The ironic risk being that the site would be more secure if it kept up at least with the forum patches.

Hi Sam, have to say i found your mock-up awful. (sorry--wish i was clever enough to do it tho') I generally like the forum as is! I use lots of other forums such as jwm, and they all recently look like your mock-up. Personally i find the layouts are no better or easier, and the colour schemes on most are almost painful to look at for long periods.
Dont mean to #### on your chips, just my own opinion as a non pc guru and regular forum user!

Afraid i'm with tintin on this one mate, guess it's just that i am use to and comfortable with the present set up, colours as they are are "easy" on the eye, unlike some other forums, top marks for your ideas tho, i'd never trash summat someone else has done when i could'nt do it myself,

My only request would be (if indeed a request was accepted) that the background colour could be changed to something more "work'ified", so it isn't too obvious what I am doing when at work

              Agreed with the above comments.
Being colour blind your two choices of colour do nothing but strain my eyes. Its not just your choice of colour, most other forums trying to be funky pick colours that make it hard to read, strain my eyes and give me a headache.

So for me, I like it just the way it is.

Will look in to the patches though.

My only "moan" about the present is the smileys, i use (or would use) the thumbs up and grin ones most but the fecker are never in the box, and most of the time i cant be arsed looking for em,

                  You know what.....

Even me being a Geek and all and running a forum myself (not 4x4 related) I think the forum is great just as is......

I think the blue is really easy on my eyes....
One day at the time I guess..

Its took me 2 years to find my way around this forum leave it alone. But do agree with Popeye on the smilies also would be good to have a general link at the bottom of the page save having to scroll back to the top.

Your mock ups hurt my eyes.

I like the current format just as it is, but would agree about having better access to the smiley’s.

I use a lot of different forums and they all have their own character and appearance and it is kind of like visiting familiar old friends.

So please don’t mess about with our forum.

Of course they hurt your eyes, they don't have bright yellow, lime green, pink, light blue, dark blue, cream, black, white, dark green and silver all in the same place at the same time

How about slight tweaks, a few subtle gradients, better contrast, slightly more current looking, still has 101 colours...
It isn't as if you have to get rid of this style to offer the choice of alternative styles.

Yeah, leave this forum as is.
There is one particular forum/site that needs a tidy up and that is is Elite 4x4. (sorry sparkz)
They've got sigs within sigs and photos/ banners within quotes etc... it's difficult to know what follows what after each post.

as the Meerkats say.... "keep it simples!"
