Im not 100% sure but i think its only on the multimode trans that you can use 4WD safely on dry tarmac.

H2+H4 L4L

There is a button on the 4WD selector lever, if it is pushed in, the truck goes into 4WD with centre diff working. You can drive this on any dry firm road at any speed no problem. The lights in the dash will show 4 green on the wheels, there should NOT be the yellow 'centre diff locked' light on. This light comes on during the transmission switching itself to 4WD, but should go out. If it doesn't go out, try going into neutral then back into drive (stopped). Don't change to 4WD whilst moving or whilst in drive, do this in neutral only.

The rest of the 4WD lever - L4L and H4L - lock the centre diff, and should not be used on tarmac.

You'll feel if the centre diff is locked on tarmac, the steering will try to spring back when you turn corners, and you'll hear the tyre scuffing on the ground as it tries to turn faster / slower.

That is a multi-mode.

Mine is a 3rd gen, does have the little stubbly lever on the passenger side.....but only has H-N-L4 on it.

What you all say now makes perfect sense. Will have to find a few green lanes to try all the settings out on the way home tonight

I do quite a bit of off roading & to be honest i only use standard 4WD, never found the need for all the other gizmo's.

You will be supprised just how good it is in normal 4WD.
