  • OS Explorer maps

Hello all just a quick question on OS Explorer maps. Green lanes are shown as green crosses but what’s the score with green dots as some green crosses go to green dots and green dots sometimes go between roads.

I have OS explorer maps 266, 265, 264, 256, OL17, OL18 & OL23 (all of north Wales and Snowdonia) latest edition in hard copy and PDF (if any one wants a copy on disc?) (having an FTP address were people can up and down load maps would be great and illegal! But that’s just a thought for someone to take up???!) I am currently looking at routes and some seem a bit iffy when looking on Google earth as they go through fields etc. I don’t want to come away with bullet holes in my surf nor miss a good driving opportunity.

Can anyone enlighten me or give OS co-ords for good lanes?

According to the legend the green crosses are "Byway open to all traffic". The green dots are "Other routes with public access....restrictions may be checked with local highways authority".
Not much help seeing as how you've still got to get a real person to tell you whether you can or can't, but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Only proper way to do it is to get a list together of where you want to go..if they are close enough to reccy, do so. This is often all you need to do as there will be signs up or blatantly obvious you cant pass.

If your routes are further afield, i always cross reference with Wayfinder but many of these are out of date. So, if you want to be 100% legal, get in touch with the relevant council office and they will tell you if you can play or not..

just had a nice long chat with a lovely woman in flint council!

she said OS ask each council for info of all foot paths byways etc so the green crosses are info from the council so they are OK to drive on. the green dots are private land and the owner has final say of what mode of transport you can travel the path on

            well a little clearer now!

As for that one..all depends how up to date our maps are. I went an bought a load of 1:50k recently as backup (in paper)..got the whole of the UK in 1:25k on MM which runs with GPS on my phone for when we're out an about

Cheers. I'll get them transferred over to the downloads site once they're up there so that others can access them.

You'd have to ask Lucky with regards to alterations on this site. As for the maps, I'll be putting them with the Salisbury one that woodzie sorted out over on here:
