even sumthin that big, what happens if you start going too fast too quick (that drop in point looks well steep, near vertical) wouldnt it put loads of stress on the engine/running gear

Doesn't put any more strain on them than ascending the same slope.

I believe his brakes gave up and he was in too high a gear. If you are in a gear low enough to keep you <10mph, you can use the brakes to stop you easily and you can accelerate quickly if you start to slide.

I always try to get into the gear I need nice and early so I dont need to panic and try to sort it out when things start getting a bit hairy.
