      Doesn't put any more strain on them than ascending the same slope.

      I believe his brakes gave up and he was in too high a gear. If you are in a gear low enough to keep you <10mph, you can use the brakes to stop you easily and you can accelerate quickly if you start to slide.

      I always try to get into the gear I need nice and early so I dont need to panic and try to sort it out when things start getting a bit hairy.

        so thats why last time we drove the happy valley you wore gold lurex and a fun fur top...really was the right gear !!!
