I believe his brakes gave up and he was in too high a gear. If you are in a gear low enough to keep you <10mph, you can use the brakes to stop you easily and you can accelerate quickly if you start to slide.
I always try to get into the gear I need nice and early so I dont need to panic and try to sort it out when things start getting a bit hairy.Cutting steps in the roof of the world
