Of course they were fitted for a reason. When manufacturers build a car, they build a compromise. 90% of Surfs probably never see anything other than tarmac - certainly in their home market of Japan. Therefore, Toyota knowing the biggest market would be road use added ARBs to reduce body roll, and increase occupant comfort. It's so school run mums dont pitch their shopping bags around when going round corners.

I dont have a rear ARB, and haven't done for years now. I ran without a front for a while, but felt it compromised on the road comfort too much so put it back. The minor increase in front articulation wasn't worth it as the limiting factor there is the fact that it's IFS and the wishbones are fairly short. If the target market was the offroad one, it would have had a solid front axle - like some of the landcruisers.

I drove a surf with 5" lift 33" tyres and no arb front or rear for over 3 years.
Never a problem and makes a massive differance off road.
However dislocating pins are not hard to fab, you then have the on or off option

is this a dumb thing to say but couldnt you just spend five minutes taking them off everytime you were planning on going offroading and then spend 5 minutes putting them back on afterwards?
or does it not work like that?

ive had both of mine off for some time now and it makes very little difrence. no matter what you drive u just drive accordingly . and if you have lifted or modded your truck in any way you will notice that it does not handle like a spors car. ... so i would say. rip em off.

I had the pleasure of offroading with the scottishmudclub recently and one of the guys had a VERY nice lifted Cherokee. He had fitted disconnects to his front arb and junked the rear one . He had the best of both worlds, good on road handling and superb articulTipn off with his arb's disconnected
