Well, Ive had 2 Alfa 156's (with the flappy padel gearbox) and would have another at the drop of a hat, great motor with no more faults than most, just make sure its had a cambelt/variator recently as these are not nice to do at home, if the variator is tired it sounds like a diesel at tickover but rarely causes any problems. Front suspensions clonk which need wishbones but theyre not dear. Dont buy a 1.6 its a revvy slug. 1.8 & 2l are good V6 is better !

Side mounts are the new top mounts !

      Toby,

Have a nosy on http://www.fiatforum.com/non-fiat/ and ask there, there's quite a few who have Alfas and should know the pros and cons.

Did you see the Top Gear about Alfas? That pretty much sums it up. Excellent cars but liable to break down and behave oddly when they are working. I considered a 156 when I got my MG but decided against it because I can't stand minor faults on cars and am terrified of reliability problems.

I hate to be boring, but for that money I'd get a Mondeo.

A mate of mine from work has just got rid of a 156 t spark, he had it for 8 years with no problems (apart from a the front brake falling off) but that was just after a garage had fitted new pads, Hmmmm, strange!!!!

I used to have the 147 2.0 liter T spark and i would have another, no problems with it at all.

just buy a clonk toby. find an old banger for a £100 quid or so,make sure it runs, has a bit of tax and mot and starts reliably.it probaly will have a few "quirks" but for a very small amount of money, you could end up with a peach.my bro in law bought a peugot 106 xs for £40 quid as a non runner, wiggled the loom and it ran,and did so till he sold it for £300 quid a while back. there are plenty of good cheap cars put there.

I loved my Alfa and would have another one anyday! Much more character and style than any of the japanese boxes.

Yes, the variator can be an issue with the TS engines apparently (mine went) and they then sound like a diesel. Cost me £150 to have it replaced along with the belt. Not bad really!

I got mine serviced by an independent Alfa / Fiat / Lancia specialist and his advice was new oil every 3000 miles and you wont have any problems with the variator.

Never had any other problems with it (other than smashing a sump on a lump of concrete on an unlit road at night . Cracking engine (2.0TS) and great fun to drive. Fantastic style, sound great, are nice places to sit, and boy are they cheap now compared to Mundanos, Vectras and the like.

                  I do fancy a 147 with the V6

[QUOTE=RodLeach;517447]To be honest i dont see a reason why you couldn't have a LC an just drive it all the time. A day out to do any lifting on it.. 30 mins to put on the big wheels an tyres...

But you're richer than astronauts Rod.

Us mere mortals couldn't run an LC as a daily driver - Boyo doesn't count, he's waaay richer than astronauts. he must be, his is petrol!!!

Buy the Alfa mate, you'll never look back!

33s and 75s are bl00dy old though mate! They're back in the day when Alfa's reputation was sadly deserved! Things have changed. They are no longer the dogs they were.

I have just got lucky I think....

The old man across the road from me can't drive anymore and he drove a little X-Reg (31-10-2000) Honda Logo...
Cracking little car, 1.4 Automatic but superb on fuel...

He said that because it was me I cud have it for £500.....
                              Whoo Hooo....

It still looks new haha and it drives like a big car.... very comfy I am already impressed..

So the saved money can go towards the LC.....
Oh and when I get the LC Debs can drive this lil car..
One day at the time I guess..
