Most modern woodburners are okay- but there's a lot cheap Chinese ones suddenly appearing due to the increased popularity of the things. If you can afford it get a branded European one like a Jotul or a Morso as these are the best (if a little expensive).

But there many other good ones out there- we used to have a Villager model for years, no problems other than routine cleaning. Hopefully we will be getting another 'woodie' soon- I'm already stock piling the logs!!

Wood- I could write an essay on this but suffice to say all wood will burn after a fashion. Pallets are great for starting the fire off but like all softwoods will burn a bit on the quick side. Hardwood logs are great to stick on once the fire is hot, oak is good but I'll burn what ever I can get. The only thing I'd avoid is railway sleepers and old telegraph pole which used to soaked in tar to preserve them. They burn alright- but the tar in the wood tends to vaporise then re-condense in the chimney flues. 'Orrible stuff!

Once you've got your woodburner you'll have one eye open all the time for possible sources of timber. Invest in chainsaw- then you can put the boot of your Surf to good use!

i'm on the lookout for a wood burner for out dining room.Shortly after we moved in one boxing day i thought i would see what was behind all the wood paneling and found a very nice inglenook fire place.All i need now is the burner to go in there
