    Your right Rob the tailgate has a T shape reinforcing ...

      Good point - I just assumed as he said 1995 - 96 3.0 and 4runner rather than surf that it was a 2nd gen UK version rather than a 3rd gen import...

        I forgot about that - I'll check the original tailgate for the switch and wire something in. Maybe my dash has that light sitting dormant ?

        Personally for 'looks' I prefer no rear carrier and no rear spoiler but need a second spare so have no choice (Although I'm still considering putting jerrycan holders on the rear carrier and the 2nd spare on the roofrack)

          I haven't tried yet but I'm almost 100% sure that there's no way it will go in without some cutting / welding.

          As I quoted above this guy tried it and had to cut up his rear quarter and weld back in to fit.

            Considering its a manual id say thats more evidence to say its a 2nd gen.

              To me it looks like 2nd gen but i cant recall seeing a 3rd gen 4runner to compare with.
              I would say as it is 95-96 it would be the 2nd gen but what year did the 3rd gen 4runners come in.
              I am supplying the tailgate and hanger so theres no need for bracing the tailgate its just in the rear pillar that Paul has to brace up.His taillights have got the reversing lights already fitted so theres no wiring for that needed so if he wants it, it will be just the rear carrier to wire in to the dash which i wouldn't bother with myself.
              I don't think Paul will have any problems bracing the rear up as popeye's truck seems ok and he did his ages back and he hasn't used alot of bracing in his.

                It only takes a few seconds to swing open the rear carrier and let’s face it the slowest part of opening up the rear of a 2nd gen is waiting for the window to wind down... and you can open the carrier with one hand as the your other hand operates the key switch for the window.

                Try accessing a under slung spare on a cold , wet and muddy night and you’ll soon appreciate how useful the rear carrier is... and besides, the rear mounted spare gives the Surf a more purposeful look which is part of the trucks charm.

                And as regards keeping the spare inside the truck, well surely t would take up a lot of the available space.
                Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

                    Aggree with that 100%, getting the underslung down even on a good day was a real pain. i find it much easier to lift the spare on & off the swingout, and it's no prob unlatching it, i never bothered with the warning light set up as i made the drop over catch to supplement the latch and striker, belt and braces
