  • Lifting engine to get at diff breather

    My front diff breather won't come out and is now rounded off. I've tried mole grips etc, but to no avail.

    Someone told me that if i undo one of the engine mount brackets (the driver's side one), then i can jack the engine up a few inches so that i can get one of my mates special sockets on there. Obviously at the moment there's no room to get a ratchet in there and turn it as the sump is in the way.

    Just wondering if this sounds feasible, and if by lifting the engine i'd be likely to break something or not? If i can lift it then what's the most i should go?

    For now, i've ripped the cap off the breather and stuffed a tube in there, but would like to do it properly.

    instead of lifting the engine why not undo the two diff mount bolts and drop the diff.???

      Cos i don't know how, haha....

      Sounds straight forward. Is it easy to get at the bolts etc?

        yea jack the truck up put it on axle stands under the chassis,get under it from behind the front wheels look up and you will see a big long bolt on either side behind the diff,undo these and the rear of the diff will drop you should be able to get at the breather better.

          i got at mine from the drivers side i think
          i just took the wheel off a few rubber guards in the wheel artch

          its was a bugga to get to and get off
          but iam like you have no idea how to do most things so i tryed to keep it simple like i ham
          am not die lex sick its you that cant read mate

                  Dropping the front diff is definitely the easer option, if you look under the truck you should be able to see what holds the diff up, if you can't get a socket on then cuz the nut has rounded off try a ring spanner of if all else fails then break the top cap off and get some screw extractors and use them, careful not to drop anything down the hole, clean around it first.
