My Surf is a bit odd as well!!

              Hi all,
Found this thread after searching around for ages, unfortunately all the piccie links are dead. I was puzzled as to why many other posts referred to 4wd options that didn't seem to work on my newly purchased surf (1996 3.0l TD Auto). Mine also has the same 4wd/gear selector setup and the 4wd selector only has 3 positions i.e forward, N(eutral) and back. Both the active positions activate a green " 4wd chassis" light on the dash but the 4wd button seems superfluous?! It's a Japanese import as it still has the flare and much of the engine labeling is Japanese. Piccies are in My Rig section (can't work out how to add piccies, search isn't much use)

some of the 1996 3rd gens will still have the 2nd gen set up as it was the change over year.I think your one of only a handfull that have said you got the 2nd gen set up on the 3rd gen.You would of needed the late 1996 model to of got the 3rd gen set up i would of thought.

If your just wanting 4WD all you need to do is push the 4WD button with the selector with the said selector in neutral, you should get the 4 green lights on.

Im almost certain yours is the one that should'nt be driven on dry tarmac in 4WD, "you have been warned".

If you can afford it invest in one of these mate.

Shiny, yes, that pic was taken just after I bought it..........and it had been all shined up for the sale.

                            ....bit dirtier now

Although the oakleaf has been taken out of the footwell.

The mechanics are different to 2nd gen, but work in the same way as second gen......so maybe the external housings are newer, but as they are early ones, they have 2nd gen type internals.

...don't drive it in 4wd on anything other than a soft, slippery surface.

sorry for jumping in but just wanted to clarify which position the larger lever should be in before enagaging/disengaging L4 as i have tried neutral / parked and L but just get grinding when i try and push the smaller lever into L4 or L2 (as if some sort of clutch isnt engaging.

sorry for the dumb question never had to use it before and assumed it would be simple

also does any one have any more info on manual hubs and pics of how these are operated and if i actually have them

my truck is an l reg 2.4 auto ssr-g

                              cheers guys

Main lever in 'P' or 'N' with engine at idle only, don't rev.
