Just a thought, it might be something as simple as a knackered injector, if the nozzle is not spraying correctly it will make the engine knock like hell, it could be a broken spring inside an injector.
Just a thought for what it's worth.

Almost impossible to diagnose without actually seeing it.

Almost impossible to diagnose without actually seeing it.
Easy to diagnose, crack off each injector in turn with the engine running, if/when the noise stops, swap that injector for a known good one, or, if you don't have a spare, swap it with another cylinder and see if the noise transfers to that cylinder. If it does, bingo !!!
