Thats what i was going to say Roy, after all your efforts filling it's still looseing water and getting hot quick, two minuits is too quick i think, mine takes around 4-5 mins, on a coolish morning i can drive from my house to nearly into portsmouth (about 3 miles) before the stat opens, i know that cos the aftermarket gauge is tapped in after the stat so dose'nt register till it's opened, i'd guess it's the gasket or worse the head, but as you just fitted it and it was ok before more likly the gasket, drawing water in, not enough to notice but enough to loose 2lt's, did you use a decent gasket (toyota) and not the ebay cheapos also did you renew the bolts? again decent ones and check the lenght aginst the originals and clean out the holes in the block,
quick try tho i'd get it warm and wip the cap off and torque em down again, if that dont work, it head off and try new gasket, also are you torqueing in the proper order? sorry, dont mean to suggest wot but just wondered
cheers ianToo young to die and too old to give a toss

Yes it was a second hand head from slugsies truck.
New head bolts and gasket all torqued down in the correct order and all the right size.
Truck has always got warm before i get to work and its only a 5 min drive, so it has always got warm quick.Roy

If you dont have an aftermarket gauge thats more lets say "segmented" (shows the temp degrees) it's difficult to tell when it's overheating, useually by the time the standard dash gauge shows too hot it's too late, mine shows normal after only about 2-3 mins, but it's not for about another 3-4 minuits that the stat opens and the aftermarket gauge starts riseing, normal running on a longish journey it'll run between 80 - 98(ish) degrees as the fans come on and off, when stuck in traffic the temp comes down to 70ish deg till the fans stop, i'm as paranoid as MattF was regarding overheating and gone to lenghts to help the old bitch keep her cool, extra rad over the back chassi, piped water to the rear and a electric water pump at the back, this was all for the veg heating but it's proveing to help cool things a bit, i'm still inclined to suspect the gasket/head, a bit of air trapped in those "high up" heater pipes should'nt cause overheating and 2lt a day loss,
i forgotten, what was the reason you changed the head in the first place? blown? did ya check the block too? hope you get it sorted mate, bl00dy annoying when this niggley shoit happens, hate to say it but theres no gaurantee the s/hand head is ok
(hurry up and sort it Roy! my hand hurts)Too young to die and too old to give a toss

The head was changed because it had cracked in 4 places, the second hand head had only been on slugsies truck for about 20 miles, where did you tap in your after market gauge, would it be an idea to fit a pressure gauge.Roy

Ok , im no tech expert like the guys on here , but about 2 years ago i had the same problem . Brand new head fitted all new gaskets and fittings
( Toyota parts ) and fitted by a very good and reliable mechanic - freind of mine also . Had truck returned and all going well for a while but i also kept losing water , no signs of leaks etc. Anyway ,put the question to one of the guys on this forum and he suggested the usual things that have been mentioned so far but also suggested to check the hoses that go through the bulkhead for the heater. On investigation i found my footwell carpet ,both sides were soaking wet but because i had the over mats it went unnoticed.
Turned out that the heater hose or what ever they are had not been tightened up and i think he said when i put the heater on it was just leaking water into the footwell. Took the truck back to my mechanic who tightened it up properly and all was ok , never had another problem after that.
Like i said , i'm no expert but the guys on here sure solved my problem.

1 Could this be a simple case of a good flush and refill, I’m fitting the bleed/fill pipes on the heater matrix pipes tomorrow, if I fill this way then do I stand a chance of getting all the air out and could this be the problem (trapped air allowing the water to turn to steam and creating high pressure, pushing it out of the expansion tank)??
2 Could I still have a head problem? Although it is a new head
3 Could it be a leak somewhere else that I cant see (checked carpets are dry)
4 Or am I missing the point completely and barking up the wrong tree?
Need as much help as possible as time is running out for my truck as I need a car soon (that’s one that works). !!!!!Roy

So it mow seems i have to refit everything with all new clips and i think ill be going for new pipes soon, i was still getting air bubbles out when pumping the water through with the hose pipe, so i think it was/is and air pocket somwhere.
Ok, so i have just checked on the stats and the new one has opened fully and the old one has only partly opened, so i may try it with the old stat back in.Roy

It's not the water fairies.
Your second hand head is fecked mate.
No visible leaks that i can see, even if the head was fecked then there would be signs, small bubbles in the water or water/steam out of the exhaust, would you not think?Roy

Take it to a garage and get the coolant sniffed. At least then you can narrow it down to a head/gasket problem or a leak. I know you did the bolts in the correct order. Are you sure you torqued them properly?
I would be tempted to get the sniffer done and if it comes up bad give them another 1/4 turn just for luck. If that doesn't work, take it off, check the gasket, check the head and check the block.
Good luck, Roy.
