yup you need to fill slowly (i use a jug) then start up and top up as req as it heats up, still say you'd be better off makeing some tee's and doing the final filling that way, save all the faffing about parking it uphill faceing mecca
i always check the the level by the bottles method, gravity being what it is and water finding it's own level means that as soon as you take the cap off water thats higher than the cap's gonna flow out, beats me why they designd the pipes higher than the filling point, bit like the guys that claim these trucks were made to go through deep water and shoit! in that cace why's the alternator fitted down low, the first thing to get swamped and set the electrics going haywire,
if your looseing water each time you drive it's got to be going somewhere, i'd tie a plastic bag on the expansion tank vent pipe and see if it collects any,
ant spits of water out the exhaust on start up? c drain the engine oil and see if theres any in it? failing all that it has to be escapeing onto a hot surface and steaming away, as said there will be some evidence of a leak after a while, like white powdery deposit, useually round the thermostat joint,

Must be kids nicking the water out whilst you're at work

Probably air. See how it goes with a slower fill.

My god you can type the story so far is, i sent the wife to screw fix to get the bits for the vent/fill pipe bits, unfortunately she couldn't understand quantity , so I've ended up with 10 vents and one drain cock so one side done correctly the other just has a vent.
fitted all the parts and ran the engine till up to temp, let it cool and filled again, so on and so on, now I'm only putting 1/4 litre in so fingers crossed i think I'm getting there, time will tell tomorrow morning, wish me luck.

Type fast and faff up the spelling ment to say get the drain cocks that have the screw cap and seal on top, i used the cheaper ones at first and they would'nt stop leaking, also i did'nt fit the bleed caps like matt, just a drain cock on each pipe, so with the bottles hung up high air has to escape into one or the other, when i filled after the stripdown i aint had to add any yet,
