  • ....rear rear window

opposed to the rear passenger window.....

.....so i want to replace my tailgate window motor.. no problem. get another of ebay, whip the old one off (the teeth on the nylon cog are well knackered and it's been man-handled a few times so i bit the bullet and got another... ). The old motor "worked" but slipped and crunched etc.. you get the picture. so whip off the old one, stick on the new one and all should be good..... well, both the keyed switch on the tailgate and the one between the seats will only turn the motor one way... and that's up. won't switch the polarity to reverse the motor. i thought it was the "new" motor at first but it does the same on the old one too. up but not down. so issue is with the vehicle. i can't imagine both switches failed at the same time so i think those can be ruled out. there's a switch with a little roller on next to the window motor that looks like it tells the window when to stop on it's upward journey?... anyway, popped of the connectors and tested that too and it seems to be in working order. i can hear a relay when the switch is turned that seems to be in the back somewhere close to the tailgate but dunno where. i guess this needs locating and testing?.... anyway, if anyone has any other ideas or has experienced this themselves i'd be most grateful for a point in the right direction!

    cheers

the main relay is behind the rear passenger side cubby hole so you will need to prise the large plastic panel off to get to the relay.
Thest the wires in the loom from the truck body to the tailgate as there is often a wire broken in there

Just adding a bit to richards post, there are two bolts holding the big plastic pannesl on that live under the light fitting in the rear, at leaston a gen 2 they are. so if its a bit hard to get off dont pull cos they break easly, have a look around ans see if you can spot then bolts. good luck.
it never rain it pours! glad I got the 4X4

Don't try and simply pull the relays off, they will need desoldered from the pcb and new one soldered on.

Just remembered if you are stuck and cant get relay then you can swap it for one of the other relays located below the window ones in my pic. they operate the rear window wiper and washer.

superb!... cheers for all the info everyone... and a pic with directions so that even i couldn't screw it up

had alook this morning, removed all the screw on bits, pulled a bit and a few clips came undone.... i guess i need the tailgate down to do the rest... therin lies the problem..

i don't think toyota could have stuck that box in a more difficult place to access than where they have!. presume the box is held on with a clip on he one side and a few screws on the other by the pic?...

                  cheers again

Held on by 2 bolts, make sure you remember where any earth wires are located on those bolts when you take em out, the plastic box simply unclips from the metal carrier.

yup, you need the window down.

you need to climb into the boot, take off the access panel, unplug motor, prop up the window with something to stop it crashing down when you remove the motor with an 8mm ratchet spanner, 3 wee bolts and out it comes, window can now be lowered.

not unless someone else knows another way.

that's what i thought.... i can take the motor out and the window doesn't move... granted, i didn't try to pull it down but it was happy as larry to sit there while i replaced the motor.....

what if i reverse the polarity of the motor?... so when i push up it'll go down?

                              cheers
