Not wanting to wind anyone up, but I dont see 'I'm not getting out of bed to do that' type phrases as an excuse.

If you want to do a job you like, you need to start at the bottom and work up, OR get the qualifications (or both these days!)

No point in saying 'I'm not doing multi drop' cos you aint gonna get the experience to do better stuff if you dont start somewhere. Or (Rod) 'what if there's something in the job I cant deal with'? Well, thats too bad really. Finding stuff hard is what makes you better at your job. You learn through experience / mistakes.

I've done some things I've hated in my time, and had to kiss the ar5e of people I dont like. Eventually though I've got to where I want to be, and have sh1t loads of electronic engineering / systems engineering experience which is now being widened further by me jumping ship from MOD to the private sector and EMC Engineering. Never done it before, and it was scary at first, now I'm on top of it and being asked to take on troubleshooting tasks for other companies.

(Today I was asked if I'd go to Milan on Saturday to see if I could work out where one of our customers were going wrong in their testing - I cant cos I'm in Wales this weekend, but its a nice pat on the back to be asked)

I guess what I'm saying is "stop whining, get on with it, suck the shit up, and work towards where you want to be". I cant stand that 'I'm better than that' cr@p.

I have to agree with Apache there.

Also, Rod, have you seen Charvell about your hand yet? And have you considered going to uni? Loads of girls there so you can give the hand a rest whilst learning something/proving you're not a retard.

just got my lgv 2 last tuesday and everyone wants experienced lgv drivers unless its multidrop which i'm not going to do.

there's jobs with no exp. ness but they're just far away enough to make fuel cost compared to earnings pointless.

just cost me £1600 to get this license plus the bits to the £112 for medical and £38 for digitach. never been unemployed, but i'm not enjoying it at all.

you just gotta keep at it mate and something will come up and you'll be good again. btw, those exercises not helping anymore?
they helped for a while mate. But they just dont seem to cut it anymore

I see your point... but i dont wanna go an get a Mcjob. I can do odds n sods here an there with the plumbing thing to tick me over happily.

What i want is a job that i just feel isn't bridging a gap.
I want to be challenged. An i want to find something i enjoy.

I see where your coming from with tough moments in a job. I've done some stuff in my short time that ive hated!!! 14 hour days doing heavy manual labour. Thats cr*p an no one can say otherwise. So yeah, Im happy to take on tough times.

But having tough times at work an depressing times at work are different .

If your someones counceller an they top themselves... you'll probably end up being effected by that unless the counseller in question is a heartless tw*t but then wouldn't be doing that job..

Well, do that. You have a top class physio/osteopath offering to help you and that's not an opportunity to be sniffed at.

To be honest, finding work's a lot tougher if you don't know what you want to do. You have the choice (basically) of learning a trading (including types of engineering, horticulture etc etc), getting a degree and being some kind of professional/middle manager or doning something dead-end to pay the bills.

                    (puts on patronising hat)

At your age, you can pretty much choose to go down whatever route you like but there's no need to go for something dead end unless you want more time to work out what you want to do.

Seriously, consider uni. It buys you time and you may even end up doing something worthwhile and interesting.

If I were you, I would keep with the plumbing until I had an idea what I wanted to do. I have two friends (amongst others). One was an IT network manager who decided he hated it. He did evening classes for a few months, then moved to Arizona and went to a specialist school teaching guitar building. He graduated and is now one of the UK's top luthiers - he built the UK's first nine string bass, check out his website http://www.jimfleetingguitars.com/

My other friend was a performance analyst in the city, went to evening classes and is now a graphic designer. http://www.nickhearne.co.uk/

My point is that you can always change from something you don't like but you have to make the decisions and take the risks.

One bit of advice; I would, personally, avoid conselling. You will probably find as time goes by that you want to help people less and less. It's also an extremely emotionally draining occupation and I would be wary of getting involved in something like that until I was 50-60 and had settled my mind down. If you think you can cope though, go fot it.

You stay where you are then. That's the way of the world, unless you start your own business. It sucks, but it's true.

i realy do understand where your comin from, time and time again ive worked my guts out for diffrent companies and watch the arse kissers fly to the top of the ladder, call it stubborn/old fashioned but i refuse to do it,i always give 100% to my job,and tbh it's got me nowhere

Not about 'kissing ar5e' really. Maybe I phrased it wrong. Its about keeping your trap shut, swallowing your pride and working hard. Swallow the company line (even if you dont agree with it), tell them what they want to hear (even if its bullshit and you dont believe a word) if it helps get where you want to be.

Once you're there, you can change things and do the job the way you want and stick two fingers up to the people you had to bow to to get there.

However, as Sanch said, if you're happy with your lot and prefer to put your pride and your misplaced ideas of what you are worth before paying the mortgage, thats fine also. Personally, I'll stack shelves, or serve chips in Maccy D's if it comes to it to keep a roof over my families head.

I could bore you in detail about how I got where I got to in MOD (which was pretty high, technically) and remained a maverick when I'd got up there, but I'll leave it there.

ok trying to stay calm at this point...........
i do not have misplaced ideas of what im worth atall whatsoever,i would and will do anything to pay the bills,my point is i won't kiss arse to work my way up,which is basically what you said, you can back track all you like, means nothing to me,but as sancho says thats the way it is these days,i'm not going into dtail here but atleast 3 times in diffrent firms ive got to management level, and the firms have gone bust,i guess we all have diffrent opinions, but if you knew my situation at the mo(as some others do here),you would understand that this is a very sensative subject with me at the mo,sorry to sound harsh etc,but yet again work wise ive been stitched up like a kipper, thankfully they have made a shed load of mistakes along the way,so i now have a little to to re evaluate what to do next, but if it comes to it"would you like fries with that?"will be sumthin im happy to say every day.
