The html code has a few minor errors, but they really are minor. Nothing that'll cause problems as such.
Picture wise, the way you've done it is the best methodology. Keep 'em small. I wouldn't try too much to get perfect picture quality. Best method is to use a jpeg with about 85% compression. Should stop any pixellation, (providing the original was good quality), and that compression ratio should also create a nice compact file size.
All in all Mark, it's a bl00dy good first attempt. My first attempt was nowhere near that.
