  • Problems starting

Today I filled up after having driven on the light for about 20 odd miles. Now, some mornings when I start I get a puff of black smoke - OK, unburned fuel, but sometimes it's blue too. Today, I had to crank it 5 times before it would turn over, and there was a very strong smell of hot oil (no, it's not a third gen).

I have a lot of rattle under acceleration which I put to needing to adjust the shims (or check, measure, replace) and I know that it takes a good second or so to start usually as either the injectors are shagged, the fuel pump needs changing or the inline fuse to the glow plugs needs checking and possibly chaning as the big one in the fuse box is OK....

What would cause this strong smell of oil?

    TIA...

Could you possibly have a leak in the fuel line, no not being sarcastic, if you have a leak you may also get air in there as well as smell fuel.

Hi Trev - I'll check for that, but it's not diesel I can smell, it's engine oil.....which is why I'm a little confused....

Is it noticeably using oil ? ie needing refilling ?

Could the rattling be from the bottom ? is it a loud rattle ?

How thick is that oil after a run ? thin or VERY runny ?

            Questions, questions....

It's barely using oil, it's quite runny after a run, and the rattle is definately coming from the top....and louder the harder the foot is planted...

Neville - that may be where it's coming from - I'll try and get it into a garage next week to have the engine stripped and we'll see....

            Cheers guys!

Stop buying gadgets and buy diesel instead.
