Relative, yes. Irrelevant, no. It's only irrelevant whilst everything is secure, and whilst you have some cushion between amount incoming and outgoings. You lose your job, prices shoot up drastically, interest rates jump, etc, you can find yourself in the proverbial before you have chance to wince.

If you are debt free, at least you can just tighten your belt, suck it up and try your best to survive.
